KSL drops Hanibal

I agree. It's time for KSL to go independent. I'm sure NBC is not happy with KSL, since historically, they were less tolerant of affiliate preemptions in the past. Even when KSL was a CBS affiliate, they did not air Northern Exposure. Time for NBC to find a new affiliate IMO.

Where else would NBC go in SLC with an established news department? If they were so concerned about these pre-emptions, they would have just bought an O&O there. Won't some other station pick it up

How about KUCW? They're usually the go-to station for any show not cleared by KSL, including SNL.
Realistically, NBC has nowhere else to go in SLC. Ch. 14 will likely do the same thing as KSL. The other stations are owned by outlets like Nexstar and Sinclair, known for their penny-pinching ways. Bonneville, on the other hand, is a very good company, even though the pre-emptions do cause NBC headaches. KSL is pretty much the only option in Utah.

and is sensitive to programs that could potentially offend its membership.
When KSL was a CBS affiliate Bill Paley, even though he didn't necessarily
like KSL's pre-empting certain CBS shows, understood why (he once said
that KSL was one of CBS's ten lowest-rated affiliates but at least they had
a reason). And Bonneville did not, and will not, change its policy for NBC.
Even (and let's make this a hypothetical) if KSL switched with ABC affiliate
KTVX, ABC would have the same problems with Bonneville's pre-empting
programs it deemed offensive. Bottom line: if you're going to affiliate with
Bonneville, you play by their rules, and I don't see anywhere NBC could go
and at least get decent geographic coverage in Utah.

I believe that will be the case, although on the station's Facebook page, they've more or less directed their viewers to watch Hannibal on NBC.com.
As for other options in regards to NBC going elsewhere in Utah (all the major Salt Lake stations cover the entire state), Bob is correct...KJZZ, the independent owned by the Miller family (the same folks who own the Utah Jazz), is in a LMA with KSL, and they practically program as conservative as KSL; this is the same station that dumped UPN in 2001 for being "too urban". KSTU, the Fox affiliate, is tied into an affiliation agreement for several more years; they were part of the group of stations that Fox sold-off to Local TV years ago. There's KUCW, but they're co-owned with KTVX. The only other English commerical station in the market (besides Ion's KUPX) is KMYU, but they're based in Southern Utah (in St. George, more closer to Vegas than SLC), and is rebroadcast back into Salt Lake City on KUTV's second subchannel.
Everything else is either educational, religious, or Spanish.

Of course, I would think KSL does not like to promote the competing station that picked up the show, instead having viewers watch on the network's website, or, in the pre-web days, just say "that's the breaks, kid".

And in terms of carrying shows that KSL passed on, KUCW is pretty much the only place, for those same reasons -- the other stations were already saddled with a network.

The shows KSL won't air are traditionally bottom of the barrel, from the awful "Couples" to Playboy Club to Hannibal (and a few other NBC bombs that escape me). People may think KSL is serving their religion and community by not airing them, but I think the real reason is ratings...they don't want to chase away their audience with such obvious clunkers.

have they turned down anything high rated (at least by NBC standards) besides SNL? They also used to pre-empt the NFL for the annual Mormon church conference and another station picked up the games.
