I logged KKOB (then it was KOB) in Cincinnati during the few minutes WABC was off air during the 1965 power blackout. They QSL'd back then...I keep hoping someday I'll find that card they sent me. Never have heard them again...it was an hour or two after sunset--perfect timing. Or at age 12, maybe beginner's luck. If WABC hadn't been my favorite station back then (I tuned in every night after supper), I doubt I would have snagged that one. I listened on a Zenith console radio from the 1940's with the "tuning eye" tube and a 100' long wire. Not a DX machine by today's standards, but the dial was a LOT less packed back then. The "clear channels" were actually clear at night...no mix of spanish & a jumble of not so weak stations. Example, when WJJD 1160 Chicago signed off, you either heard KSL Salt Lake City weakly in the distance or you heard noise...big difference from today. But all was not a DXer's paradise...the graveyard channels sounded just as bad then as they do now. 40 mile daytime coverage shrank to 7 miles (or less in some cases) just like it does today.jd said:vibe said:I'd like to know how far east does the 770 in Albuquerque and 660 from Window Rock penetrate.? Since KKOB and KTNN use nighttime patterns with deep nulls in an easterly direction (toward WABC and WFAN, respectively) they're really unlikely catches. Your best (or maybe your only) chance would be the narrow window just before their local sunset times when they're still non-directional. Or if you ever catch them running tests in the wee hours with the daytime rig, but something like that's very rare. If you're really looking to log some extra states you might want to check out this site occasionally for any upcoming tests: www.dxtests.info/ (Or if you subscribe to it, they'll notify you when something new is posted.)
