KSOC Transmitter Upgrade????????

According to www.radio-locator.com it looks like they've updated their coverage map and also it looks like they're raising their antenna so it can cover more of the DFW area. Anybody noticed this?

From what is described in the application it appears that this is simply an antenna replacement. It happens that the new antenna will be mounted higher on the tower than the existing one, but just by 30 feet; that means any increase in their coverage area will be negligible. KSOC is already at maximum power and they can't move any closer to second-adjacent stations KLNO and KLTY, both of which are at Cedar Hill. So any real improvement to their signal just isn't going to happen unless the separation requirements are changed and that's not very likely.

What they need to upgrade is their programming. Especially that playlist.

I agree, maybe something like KDAY in L.A.??

I was in Dallas last weekend and listened to several hours of KSOC, the music sounded fine to me but I am an old school guy. It did sound like a rather lifeless station, voice tracked DJs and satellite shows.

Here is my suggestion, spend some money on a full slate of live and local DJs with a history on urban radio in Dallas. Add a local component to the TJMS perhaps with a locally known cohost providing news and commentary. I like the music a bit better on KSOC but I thought KRNB sounded much more together with a good team of DJs even though some of them may have also been voicetracked.

I could deal with the "golden oldies" on 94.5 if the station wasn't so boring. How about themed weekends? Like a "Lady of Soul Weekend". Bring back the mixshows that was once on the station.

I do favor KRNB's nusic and programming though.

They might be done upgrading by this weekend, I heard!!

The signal won't really make a huge difference, crap is crap. I don't care how big a song is or how well it tests, eventually people will get tired of it. I would rather leave people wanting more than beat them to death with it. It's late July & Radio One is still playing 'Love Letter' R Kelly..that song came out in November 2010, 9 months ago! In heavy rotation for 9 months, talk about OVERKILL! These programmers play the same crap nonstop so any 'format change' is like a breath of fresh air & people flock to listen, then when they get tired of the new stuff & realize the music is not changing bc some idiot programmer gets comfortable & thinks they found the 'answer' then they stop listening & wait for the next format change. People want variety of music, entertainment, community news & info, community involvement, to be able to call in & actually talk to a LIVE person...u know the things that actually MADE radio unique & different. I can get music so many different places, & people wonder why these jukebox stations aren't successful?? But yeah they won't be successful, it will crash & burn.

My Tune In app presents are mostly Urban AC stations. Majority of them have that song in high rotation. Im not a fan of it but the ladies love it. Neitherless that staton needs a change badly

I just hope Radio One is smart enough to make a change that will move 94.5 forward instead of setting them back even farther.

Most of the turnover is with the airstaff over the years. Even hiring local vets from K104, KRNB and the late KRBV really havent helped. I would figure at least Michael Baidsen would have fit the station I havent listen to his show in a long time since it aired here in Los Angeles in 2009.

I'm hearing that Baisden's numbers are not good at his home base in New York.

Well dropping him might be a good way to get more listeners and return the station to a more local driven direction in the afternoon. I haven listen to the Bad Boy in a long time so Im sure Im not missing anything. I know Joyner history in Dallas is rich on KKDA and KRNB but I wonder how his show is doing. Might be best to part ways with him. If I was running KSOC jockless for a month and hire new local talent. It also wouldnt hurt to mix up the music and reachout to other races whites and hispanics. I know for a fact alot of people in the Dallas area are missing the Oasis til this day.

I love Baisden's show....he's #1 here in Charlotte. Radio One has Doug Banks & his show is very dry so it's not very surprising why they're losing. That's how they do here in Charlotte too..the entire airstaff was at V101.9 or Power 98 at some point...even the support staff. They lack confidence & wait for CBS to test talent or songs & make sure it's 'safe'. They're reacting instead of being proactive & that's why they're losing! I actually liked Love Letter at first...but I was tired of it by February. My point of saying that was to say they need to keep their station current. KSOC is Joyner's flagship that's probably why he's still on & the fact that Radio One is part owner in Joyner's Reach Media.

Mac, I'm in Charlotte also. In some ways R-O's situation here is similar to to the situation in DFW. SIGNAL PROBLEMS--R-O has two 6K's while the CBS Urbans are both 100K flamethrowers. Therefore, they have to do something different, I don't see that happening with 92.7. Putting Banks on against Baisden is hardly different and is doomed to failure. I don't think their current experiment of adding one gospel cut an hour is well concieved either--V101.9 tried that years ago when Praise first came on.

Right, Doug Banks was definitely a dumb move. When ABC & Citadel merged & they dumped Banks for Baisden, that wasn't a sign? Although I do enjoy the music on Banks show, the show itself is very boring. They're not adding gospel every hour, Kirk Franklin 'I Smile' is one of their top songs right now, it's also high on UAC charts. Alvin Stowe, who programmed both RO stations up until early 2009 was a Jesus freak & he played the hell out of that gospel on 92.7 so I don't think they would go back in that direction. I don't think the signal makes a whole lot of difference, that's an excuse. If they're continuously losing, one would think they would be MORE willing to take risks & do something different, yet they keep doing the same things expecting different results.
