Does anybody know if KSOC still upgrading their signal??

I thought the move to the Ethel, TX tower 4 or 5 years ago was the final upgrade they could ever make...and that only gained them a mile or two over the old Collinsville tower location. That frequency's signal has been a dog since it was KGAF-FM in the late 1950s. It was never meant to be a rimshot...maybe that's why the Leonards chose GAINESVILLE as its city of license. Unless First Broadcasting comes in and buys up every 94.3, 94.5 and 94.7 in a 300-mile radius just to shut them all down and blast K-Sock into DFW, I think we'll have to enjoy it as-is. And really, looking at the last couple of books (I know, what's a book?!?), K-Sock has grown into a fair contender...and that's especially remarkable considering that their target audience is barely within even the secondary pattern. The older, more affluent black audience that craves that music is willing to put up with the static just to hear it, I guess...ESPECIALLY since their Oasis was taken away from them.

(And if I were Sirius/XM, I'd be pushing the ala carte music package to that specific audience--$8 or so a month for real R&B oldie and smooth jazz variety, spread across multiple channels, with no static and no spots? Worth every penny.)

Charles, have you seen any pending FCC apps on file for them? If not, I'd assume it's a dead issue...but I could be wrong!

KSOC is owned by Radio One.

KLNO 94.1 and KLTY 94.9's Cedar Hill facilities are what prevents KSOC from moving closer. FCC spacing rules for full class Cs to other second and third adjacent class Cs are 105 km (65.2 miles). KSOC's tower is 66 miles from the Cedar Hill ones.

All KNOR 93.7, KSOC, KHYI 95.3, KFWR 95.9, KPMZ 96.7, KLAK 97.5, KBOC 98.3, KFZO 99.1, KWRD-FM 100.7, KTCY 101.7, KESN 103.3, KTDK 104.1, KZMP-FM 104.9, KRNB 105.7, KZZA 106.7, KDXX 107.1, and KESS 107.9 can do is move along a circle around Cedar Hill whose radius is the minimum spacing separating their FM class from the Cedar Hill Cs (or C1 in KMVK's case for KDXX and KESS). That is, of course, their movement around such a circle doesn't involve spacing issues to other stations. In KSOC's case, it can't move westward along that circle with a 105 km radius (i.e. to the northeast Wise Co/southwest Cooke Co tower farm where 93.7/96.7/98.3/101.7/106.7 are) since that would cause problems with KWKQ 94.7 Graham. Moving eastward would be pointless since it would begin removing coverage on the western side of the market.

Salem is spot on with this. Anyone interested in urban music needs to check CDs. Although KRNB is MUCH better at it, I appreciate KSOC's efforts for "new soul" and some of the older tunes but while I am vibing to whatever, they throw in Lil' Jon or some such, I pull out my gun, shoot my radio and there goes the day.
