KSSJ No Longer Smooth Jazz (Well Kinda)

Looks like KSSJ Sacramento have dropped the "Smooth Jazz" off their branding and being being referred to 94/7 KSSJ. There are some new vocals along with some vocals that have been beat to death in the format today. The instrumentals are kinda the same though. Don't know if a format flip is in the works, but warranted a "heads up".

KRVR recently dropped the "jazz" part of their slogan as well. Now, Smooth 105.5

Well it could be interesting what will happen to KSSJ Next. They could follow KTWV's lead

I don't know, it's possible. I was reading the smooth jazz entry on wikipedia the other day and found an old "slogan", if you will, that fits what they are doing IMO, and that's "Smooth Rock, Smooth Jazz".

Wow, and SSJ was consistently top 10 6+ (which I know doesn't mean much if you don't know their 25-54). True, there is no pure alternative station in the market, but there are a couple of mod ACs that serve the female side of that audience.

I am sadden to see KSSJ go. Now, it's just another radio station where you can here the same thing on another station in the same area. I wonder if KRVR in Modesto will be the next to flip. There are kinda doing the same things (adding different vocal songs not usually in out format) and have already dropped the jazz from their slogan. We'll see. :-\

Not true...Sacramento didn't have alternative.

This new station is called radio 94.7

Lee Hansen checked in in Carol Archer's column this week. If there is any good news to be found in this thread it is the fact that he is still working for the station as the APD for the new format. He has background with Alternative and rock and I love it that they kept him on instead of automatically running the "age trip" on him. One thing he mentions is that in the smooth jazz format the majority of the stations listeners were actually over 65. This is something that a lot of us waved a red flag about when the format began its shift from contemporary instrumentals to oldies and covers and consciously eliminated any elements of the music that were deemed "too exciting."

Again, gotta say that contemporary instrumental music is alive and exciting. The segment of it that radio chose to expose is not and unfortunately that is the public face of the genre right now.
