KSSX-FM Ratings (Formerly KOGO-FM)

Another 1.4 in the ratings. Time to abandon ship and fire another consultant? Evolution worked for Boston and is now in Miami. I think it could work for here too.

OMG. This format has been on for all of two books, and we have format flip posts.

CC does not use consultants as a rule as they are big enough to have the format specialists in house.

Evolution went down on a limited Class A FM in Boston, and it is on an HD-2 / very limited translator in Miami. It has no track record yet, so they are not going to take a full market signal to an unproven format.

Uhhh, yeah.... 1.4 is the worst ratings that station's ever gotten. And yes, for two books in a row which means it's not growing an audience. How many books do you want it to have? FM 94/9 at its lowest was higher than a 1.4 and everyone was talking about a flip. I guess your standards are lower than mine, DavidEduardo

My standard is a 4.7 and a 3.6 in 18-49....

Does Kiss have all its DJs and elements in place for more than a few weeks? Has it done any advertising? 1.4 may be a low place to start but it really isn't fair to consider a format flip after two books.

Let's remember this is an adult format, with some songs going back to the 70s. Adult formats take more time than youthful formats to show ratings. After more than a decade in the Adult Alternative format, KPRI is finally in the Top 10. OK, Clear Channel isn't going to wait that long for Kiss. But two months...

By the way, why did they change the call letters? What's wrong with KOGO-FM? CBS seems to go out of its way to name its FM stations after its long-time AM stations, even if they have different formats... KCBS-FM, WBZ-FM, KNX-FM, WBBM-FM. If you're going for an adult format, most adults already know the KOGO call letters. And as David would point out, on many stations call letters are only used for the legal I.D. anyway. Why spend $200 asking the FCC for a call letter change? Would anyone who isn't a radio pro know KSSX is supposed to mean "Kiss"?

I'm not even sure it's smart to name a San Diego Rhythmic Oldies station Kiss. In Northern San Diego County, some folks are listening to a Top 40 station called KIIS, that's been around since the 80s. Why have two Clear Channel stations with overlapping signals and different formats call themselves Kiss?

Because KIIS (102.7) is not a San Diego station. Both are owned by Clear Channel so they can do whatever they want. Its possible in the future the Rhythmic Oldies/ Rhythmic AC format will evolve in a Rhythmic station. I agree the Lady Gaga and Marvin Gaye in the mix wont last.

KIIS is not a San Diego station but it gets ratings in Northern San Diego County. Having two Kiss stations with overlapping signals and different formats is not logical. I wouldn't open a fried chicken restaurant and call it McDonald's.

And no one who puts a Rhythmic Oldies station on the air is planning for the day it will transition to a Rhythmic Top 40 station. One aims 25-54, one aims 18-34. If you want a Rhythmic Top 40 station, that's what you'd do from Day One. San Diego already has three Top 40 stations, two mainstream, one Rhythmic. If you count KSIQ, that's four.

Someday Rhythmic Oldies stations may drop Marvin Gaye, who hasn't had a hit since 1982 and who died two years later. But I doubt they'll drop Lady Gaga, who was one of the top selling artists only a few years ago.

A Clear Channel wannabe version of Victor Diaz's old Jammin' Z90? Oy, been there people. How ironic that "La X-96" was on this frequency so many years ago, international treaties, frequency swaps and "Big Ass Busses." Good old radio days. Life was good. ::)
Cheers.
