KSTR-TV Broadcasting Only a "Now in Digital" slide.

KSTR-TV 49 is running nothing but a slide that says "as of January 12, we are only transmitting in digitial".

Thats the kind of thing the rest of the broadcast stations in this market need to do BTW, Run 24 hours as a test to shut off the tap per se before the big switch in feb.

How about a indian-style chart card but instead with a picture of a donkey...below have a crawl/CG that says "Hey JackA**, we already switched to digital, you need cable or digital tuner/antenna to get our programming", maybe even throw in a mix of smooth jazz w/ the occasional soundFX of a braying donkey. I think that would get the message across quite plainly and humorously to boot.

It appears they've now shut off their analog transmitter completely.

They did? Where are the riots in the streets? Did the phone system melt down with complaints from viewers who can no longer see them?
Oh the horror. Congress and the White House say we're not ready. Others say the DFW area in particular is not ready. Yet, this station has already made the switch and the world did not collapse.

But you still have the other DFW stations that have yet to switch.

Can they do this without government grief? Why all the hubbub about 2-17?

2/17 is the day they are REQUIRED to stop broadcasting their analog signal. (unless congress votes this week to delay the date to June)
That's what the hubbub is about.

I'd like to see a lot of stations switch before 2/17 and stay all-digital even if congress moves the date.

To be blunt, I have a hard time understanding the strong feelings on the DTV transition delay question.

Personally, I'll be better off if they stick with the 2/17 date - but only because I want KDFW 4 analog off the air so I can use that channel in-house without interference, and because it'll be a lot easier to get KXII's digital signal (83 miles away) when it's on VHF channel 12 instead of UHF channel 20. In general, DXers will benefit from having several new holes opened up in the TV spectrum.

But I doubt there are many D/FW residents with similar desires. In any case, it's not as if we'll be terribly inconvenienced if the transition is delayed a few months. After all, nobody is making us watch the analog stations!!

OTOH, we know there are many folks who've applied for their converter box coupons late but got stuck on a waiting list because Washington didn't authorize enough money for the coupon program. We also know there are many folks who applied for their converter box coupons early but ended up having them expire due to rampant supply shortages early on coupled with the mandatory 90-day expiration dates. These folks will likely get a break when the stimulus bill passes, but if the transition happens before they get their coupons, they'll be in the dark for a while.

Sure, crack all the "they'd be better off without TV anyhow" jokes you want - but those folks aren't the ones paying beaucoup bucks every month for a gazillion HD channels anyhow - if they were the transition wouldn't affect them in the first place! And the period they'll go without TV happens to coincide with the Texas severe weather season.

So let's get a grip here. For folks like us, sooner is better, sure. But it's really not that big a deal.

If they move the date, I suspect that's exactly what will happen.

The stations most likely to keep the analog signal on are the ones with the most audience members to lose (the major network affiliates) and the ones moving from VHF to UHF and staying there after the transition (for whom keeping the analog transmitter on is relatively inexpensive). In D/FW, that means channels 4, 5, and 13. Most of the others will probably switch on or about 2/17 no matter what Washington does.

IIRC the wording says full power stations cannot broadcast in analog after 2/17.
The countdown on the official dtv.gov website is counting down to the end of 2/17 (midnight.)
