So we have quite an epic battle in this market. The fantastic clash between KFYI: A station that has an aged listener base, mostly syndicated, foolish or out of touch hosts (aside from Jim Sharpe) and KTAR: A station with a positioner that might as well be "We talk, you listen". Listener response and reaction to local events is unimportant and of course with the overwhelming talent the station puts on the air, you can see why they wouldn't want to break up that fantastic roll with anyone in the audience. You know... he audience that's part of the community that they're supposed to be serving, the audience that buys the products they advertise.
...and terrestrial radio wonders why it's ultimately becoming as irrelevant as the newspaper. Actually they don't wonder that because they're on the Titanic and even with the engine room flooded and water rising fast they'll tell you how the ship is unsinkable. Anyone that is remotely honest with themselves would be able to assess the problems with this once might business of terrestrial radio.
I listen because I'm passionate about the business.. I'm somewhat involved in it still these days and I guess there is just a bit of morbid curiosity as to how bad it will get. My involvement aside, the facts are what they are, young people don't listen to radio. Do you know anyone under 23 outside of the business (or interested in the business) that listens to terrestrial radio anymore? Why don't they listen? Because frankly there's nothing for them to listen to anymore.
When one station caters to 50 year olds, another station doesn't care what you have to say and shuts you out---not to mention is just a bad product, then what do you expect?
