KTAR buried!

Anyone who has any access to ratings now knows...the experiment failed!

While one needs to give Ankarlo a chance, the PR flaks who have been touting FM as the savior of KTAR-ded have to step back and say, "uh................................................" :-\

Every time someone dies of old age, KTAR loses another listener.

Start programming for the living, not the nearly dead.

Hire people with opinions, not phonies like Aunt Carlos who had to go kiss every [EDIT] in town on his first show.

They can do ads all the time poking fun at KFYI for syndicated stuff, but they have yet to offer any compelling reason to listen to KTAR.

(except when it rains, I love to hear if its raining where the callers are, its almost like being there!!!)

[EDIT-profanity]

You're right. Talk stations on FM are doomed. It's a complete failure.

Did you catch Crummey doing an hour this afternoon on 'did your pipes freeze last night?' But, no one on this board will call him out on it.

Geez! One book and it's over? Come on!

They just went to FM on the first day of the Fall book. Let's continue to see what the trends do over the next month or two and then take a real close look at the Winter book before we make the call.

There is the new host, a big money contest, supported with direct mail pieces that I just received, plus all kinds of marketing happening. I would like to see two full books on FM before I declare the move to FM a failed idea.

If I were the PD, I would ditch McMahon, again....and for good this time, plus send Simons packing and get some really compelling hosts that would be able to hippen things up a bit as well. Not sure what else you can do with an FM News station besides drive cume with traffic on the 10's, weather alerts and news updates. KTAR is a news and information station. Always has been. Always will be.

Which site has the correct (ratings) numbers/rankings?

All Access has one set of stats labelled Fall 06, FMQB has
a different set of stats labelled Fall 06, and R&R is missing
the boat--they haven't updated with today's releases yet.

Now come on girls, let's not get in a dither over 12+ shares. By Wednesday evening the Old Gringo will share with us the 25-54 break out for KFWhyEye and News 92~three, where Hip Hop used to live. Nurse Jeff and I suspect KFWhyEye will all of sudden be older and KT'R won't. And one final thing: compare the $$ The Men In Secret Underwear have spent on News 92~three, where Hip Hop used to live, compared to what the CCU suits have spent on KFWhyEye in the past six years! TMISU are serious. CCU aint.

We will have "actuals" at the same time today as the Arbitrends data came out yesterday; I don't like extrapolations on the third phase of a book, as the numbers are extraps of extraps of extraps. Let's see the real numbers month by month and see the 25-54, which is, after all,t he entire reason for the FM move.

...While one needs to give Ankarlo a chance...

Why? Will he require more time to establish himself as an idiot?

Aunt Carlos is a significant improvement over McBland, Tony Snow, Leibowitz and anyone else who has done mid-day talk on KT'R during the past ten years. The weak link continues to be Captain Stupor, but Nurse Jeff and I know TMISU are secretly planning his second retirement party.

We're awaiting the puff of smoke from Old Gringo's chimenea when the demos are released. The Nurse and I rely on freebie ratings as the maintenance bill on the '76 Gremlin Levi's Special is a major drain on our wallets!

I'll take Leibo over Ankle loss any day. Sure David does some stupid shows from time to time, but he has some passion and is willing to tweak some noses around.

Ankle is just a suck up, he sounds like a disc jockey who wandered into talk radio.

Maybe he will get more edgy, but, as for now, he is exactly what KTAR wants: "safe"

And safe is dull

Is it snowing where you are?

As much as I dislike the type of radio KTAR does, I must agree that more time is needed to establish whether or not the move to FM is a sustainable model or not. Look at FREE-FM, it's been on the air for a year and the ratings are still awful, if News 92.3 looks as flat as FREEFM after the same time period, then we shall all declare it a failure. So far though, it does look bleak--13th place, ouch.

Aunt Carlos is essentially another Dead Ted Simons, he sounds like Ted, he speaks like Ted, he has only slightly more topical discussion than Ted, and we all saw how bad ol' Teddy did... so right now failure seems inevitable, but in this market, no one really knows for sure.

Kind of like that DJ that wandered into talk radio at KFBK in 1987? Heaven forbid we'd have anyone with actual radio experience.

At least with Crummey you get his nonsensical radio schtick that makes it easier to listen to.

We're still waiting for the Old Gringo to chime in with demos on the battle between KFWhyEye and News 92~three, where Hip Hop used to live. With something like 90% of all listeners under the age of 55 listening on FM, wouldn't you want to be there too? TMISU saw an opening and took it. Smart decision.

Is Pat McMahon boring where you are?

As far as numbers go, I heard that KZON was up a few ticks. I also heard that KHOT and KQMR Spanish were #2 & 3 and that KTAR FM was a no show, but that KTAR AM was up in the 3's. Does anyone have some actuals that can be posted without issue?

Well, what is there on AM? 550 and, until 1/1, 620. The rest of the band is a bunch of no-shows and 0.4s. The third-tier talkers on 960 and 1480 are winners by comparison to the rest of the band. Having two stations split most of a 10 share isn't too bad. Besides, AM is a niche market anymore. Look at all the stations that don't rate but make a lot of money. Korean stations, shopping stations, investment guru stations, All Mortgage Talk All The Time stations...

I'm like a broken record, but it doesn't matter who's listening to your band if you have nothing that they specifically want to listen to. It's like having space in the trendiest, hippest mall in town, the one where all the rich kids shop, and opening a store that sells walkers and canes.

"KTAR (AM)" includes KTAR-FM, since the station opted for single line reporting. SLR means that two or more simulcast stations that are 100% identical in programming can be listed under one single set of calls so that media buyers understand that it is a single buy on multiple frequencies.

KQMR/KMMR/KKMR is an example of three stations in the market that are 100% simulcast and which are listed under one single set of call.

KHOT was #2 25-54 and KQMR was #5 in the sales demos. All Christmas was the big winner.

As to KTAR, the 25-54's in December were not as good as November, but still above historic levels. As we know, n/t stations take a time to develop any changes, and the start looks quite good, although KFYI beat them in both 12+ and 25-54 for the full book.

Well, Barnes did an hour all about the tv show 24.

So, today, 3 days later, McBland did the exact show.

More stimulating talk radio....

Well, as COLD as it was earlier this week, I wondered if it was snowing where you are??

Prompted me to think of a stimulating show, When do you think it will reach 100 degrees??

McBland, boring; Barnes, even more boring;

I am longing for Bob Mohan !

You cracked us up! The Nurse and I are coughing more than John Dahl! We didn't realize McBland has a lock on boring!

Well, McBland did some fascinating stuff today, "why do people drive poorly in the rain", an hour of "American Idol " chat, and the ever popular "ask a doctor" show.

Brilliant stuff. Yesterday he was talking about the Fight Night gala with the organizer and profusely thanking him for his free tickets.

I enjoy his show, but only in a surreal way.
