KTAR-FM/Channel 12 partnership

I am surprised that no one noticed this, but it seems that KTAR is in a new news partnership with Channel 12 in which they get to cross-promote one another. It kind of makes sense for KTAR to join forces with the TV newscast that will be number one from here until eternity, but then again KTAR listeners will have to set through a Lin Sue Cooney news tease every afternoon! OUCH!

Since I Moved here eight years ago I have always wondered with 12 is number 1. I try watching it but really don't care for the majority of the talent on the channel.

I'm not sure who is really "number one." Stations look for a successful niche demographic so they can use the phrase. For me, 12 is nice...not great, but pretty good. Their news set looks terrific, by the way. I get dazzled by the design of the news sets in HD on 12, and 15. Content is another matter, but gee, they look good, in my opinion.

Overall, for me the "down home" local nature of channel 3 is the most enjoyable, friendly, and as goofy as I am. I like 'em. Okay, I admit it...I have no class. I can't help it. It's genetic.

Smart! Free plugs on TV for KTAR. Don't know the details, but perhaps KTAR will be able to call on the TV station's reporters when there are big stories or investigative series? Just me, or does it seem like somebody's asleep at their desk at FYI?

Don't watch/listen to either. And, until content trumps visuals they'll both stay off my menu.

The joint venture with Mc12 also allows KT'R to use no-name meteorolgists to replace Ed Phillips and not have to pay 'em. Nurse Jeff and I can't wait until Mac & Cheesy Gaydos get to be on Mc12...What a Joke!!

Wasn't KTAR tied to channel 5 a couple of years ago?

10-4. Supposedly Deputy Dan did traffic during channel 5's morning news...
well at least the last hour of it, since he never showed up on KT'R until 6:00.
I recall his pic being on the KPHO-TV website.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Long time Phoenicians will recall when KTAR AM, KTAR FM (later KBBC) and KTAR TV were all owned by the same company, Combined Communications Corporation (CCC). In fact, if you drive by the KPNX studios, you can still see a stained glass mosaic on the west-facing outer wall of the building with three large Cs that look like they're swallowing each other. That's the CCC logo. It used to be covered up with a Ch 12 logo, but I guess the suits figured nobody would know or care what the CCC stood for by now.

Anyhoo... Back in the day, TV AM and FM all shared the same building.

I remember visiting as a high school kid and looking at KTAR master control, and noting that a Dodgers game was on (this was probably 4 PM on a weekeday, mind you.) Across the hall and behind some glass was the bear-like figure of KBBC FM afternoon jock Dennis McBroom spinning vinyl - yes, turntables in 1978 or so... And yes, it's the same Dennis McBroom heard today doing traffic on KSLX and other stations.

The only person asleep at KFYI is the one listening to KTAR.

The more they really do stay the same. Dennis McBroom is "Jim Nelson" doing traffic on KTAR-FM.
