KTAR off Air

I tuned to KTAR just after midnight, and got a weak Mexican station. It was off for at least 15 minutes.

Anyone know why and for how long?

Maintainance? They were back on this morning as usual.

They're working on their transition to digital.

The weak mexicans?

.We actually were off the air to put the new BE solid state transmitter on line. I had to take it off to trace out the remote control wiring to mute the DX10 and BE when we switch from DA to non da and to switch transmitters. If you switch hot with RF on the coax switches they can get burned up. The new transmitter will be the one transmitting IBOC when we get ready to turn it on. The old Harris MW5A has been retired has been replaced.

Probably Hanford, CA. Most of the Mexicans on 620 are off by Midnight, PHX time.

Et tu, KT'R? Which loosely translated
means "must you IBOC?" :-(

But if you do--or I suppose "when you
do" would be a better phrase--is it your
understanding (see my KFYI/IBOC thread
below) that you can IBOC only from sunrise
to sunset? I would be very unhappy if
I tried to tune in KFI at night at got
your IBOC "hash" on 640!

I was under the impression the station had in fact pretty much turned into to a "weak" Mexican station. Olla!

THAT WOULD BLOW.

REALENGINEER - ANY PLANS TO GO 10KW DAYTIME ?

ALSO,

IF I HAD AN HD RADIO AND KFI WENT TO HD, WOULD 640 SOUND LIKE A LOCAL STATION ?

KFI is broadcasting IBOC, or was until their tower came down last year.

THATS RIGHT.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY WATTS IS USED FOR THE 640 KFI IBOC ? ..I'M SURE IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE A DIFFERNCE FOR PHOENIX LISTENING.

IF KFI WERE TO RUN IBOC AT NIGHT; HOW MANY WATTS WOULD BE REQUIRED TO NOTICE SIGNAL IMPROVEMENT IN PHOENIX ?

Didn't Emmis install the DX-10 about a year or two ago? I believe that model can be retrofitted to broadcast IBOC, why didn't Bonneville do so? Is it because they're a loyal BE customer? It just doesn't sound right for a broadcaster to replace a relatively new transmitter if it's working fine.

KFI Antenna

What is the status of KFI's antenna? Are they going to rebuild as it was?

I used to get them loud and clear, but very weak signal now. I assume they are still at 25K.

WOR states on an IBOC audio sample site that they run 1500W digital vs. 50KW for their analog signal, and that the digital signal is solid to 90 or more miles.

Please, let's hope KFI never turns on their IBOC at night (it trashes adjacent channel reception).

I KNOW THIS BELONGS ON THE ENGINEERING BOARD..

BUT SINCE WE'RE HERE..

IS IT 1500W DIGITAL VS 100KW FOR FM ANALOG SIGNAL ?

WHAT'S THE STANDARD ??

They are 25 k in a 1&8 wave antenna. Things are proceeding slowly at the rebuild, but I heard that they believe they can get a replacement tower at the existing site in another 9 to 12 months.

Obviously, they want to rebuild it with a half/wave tower, and are willing to wait. The signal that matters, over LA and Orange County, has not suffered and that is all that matters for sales.
