KTAR Preempts for Funeral Coverage

Turned on KTAR on Saturday at 11:40 expecting to hear Mark Salem then the Data Doctors. I heard church music. I checked to make sure I had FM 92.3. After a few minutes I realized it was funeral coverage for recently deceased LDS president Gordon B. Hinckley. I listened to KTAR earlier at 7:56 and Michael Dixon nor Gayle Bass mentioned the program change. Checking out website and the change is not listed there.

KTAR is owned by Bonneville Broadcasting, which in turn is owned by the LDS church. The loss of the prophet is as large a deal to them as the pope to Catholics. KTAR may have decided not to promote the coverage for whatever reason. I doubt they had the option of not carrying it. The LDS General Assemblies were for years broadcast on KASW (English) and Mas TV (Spanish) with little fanfare.

I'm sure it was a "must carry" from corporate.

Lucky for KT'R there wasn't both a Suns and an ASU game
scheduled to be on-air at 11:30am. Of course, there's
always K-Lite (which was running regular format, as was
Sports Parking Lot 620).
