KTAR Problems...

KTAR has several issues.

#1 The station has no identity. Their biggest name is syndicated, tape delayed and for the most part, unavailable to comment on Arizona or service the community. Their other 2 big names are not full time. Pat McMahon has enjoyed one hell of a career but is past his prime, and Al McCoy only calls Suns games.

#2. The “filling in for Ankarlo” deal is getting really, really old. In fact, it is becoming its own punch line. Ankarlo is not a big enough name in this market to justify this type of waiting game. And if they do replace Ankarlo, KTAR needs to make a statement. Austin Hill and Jim Sharpe do a good job, but neither carries any real weight in this market. KTAR must be budget challenged and unable to afford top talent at this time.

#3. Russ Hill has worn out his welcome as PD with incompetency. Mac and Gaydos in afternoon drive? Are you kidding? These guys would be lucky to do afternoons in a small to medium market, let alone market #15 on a heritage talker like KTAR. They sound like a contrived morning zoo show targeting high school kids. This is an insult to the KTAR audience and a direct blow to the station’s credibility, if any remains.

If KTAR ever gets a serious competitor with local content on the FM dial, say bye-bye. Game over.

You're right, KT'R has several issues. Issues KFWhyEye would love to have...and you can't blame it on KOOL Kris, either!

I have the answer for this, listen to KDUS 1060, more live shows and down right nice people and also on the HD2 channel of KUPD

#1: KTAR does have an identity that seems to resonate with a lot of listeners, as born out in the overall ratings by demo.

#2: Bonneville is a classy operation for standing behind one of their employees in a situation not of his own making and certainly not of his own choosing. I have actually enjoyed listening to Austin Hill and Jim Sharpe. Both are classy gentleman and fun to listen to. Kudos to Bonneville and KTAR for doing the right thing.

#3. Russ Hill has made his fair share of mistakes, but what PD hasn't? He has actually done a decent job running KTAR. True, I am not thrilled with his choice of Mac & Cheese, but I like a lot of what he has done with KTAR. Also, I wouldn't bet on Mac & Cheese sticking around too much longer. Contracts do run out, you know.

If i was Russ I would keep Kid of Kid and Ruben phone number handy. He can also do talk and it wouldn't be a bad idea to maybe do this"

Az Morning News - 5-7
Glenn Beck Live - 7-9
Austin Hill 9-12
Kid and Click Chick 12-3
Crummey 3-7
Not sure about nights

Kid (call me Darren, no, wait, call me Kid) was in the regular Ankarlo fill-in rotation for a while, but hasn't been heard from lately. I think it was just after his on-air identity crisis. Coincidence?

All of Ankarlo's stand-ins have done a good job, really. Sharpe, Hill, Kid, St. James...maybe one of them can stick around and be the new PM drive personality. Hey, I'd even listen to Mac by himself. Gaydos really needs to go back on sports - that's the audience he suits best. I don't know about having Beck live, though. Too many people would be late for work because they'd be sitting in their cars in the parking lot, yelling at the radio.

As for nights, I'm sure they can find another KFYI retread somewhere. Even Phil Hendrie's syndicated show was on KFYI about 8 or 9 years ago.

Beck I turn off.

But I listen to and yell at Crummey sometimes.

Gets me weird looks at stoplights.

Bonneville is anything but classy, they are merely trying their best to avoid a possible lawsuit and/or PR nightmare. For now, I'll leave it at that--but rest assured that if they could have, they would have ditched Ankarlo a long time ago.

Glenn Beck and Phil Hendrie are about the only commodities that KTAR really has--surprise, they're not local talent... for some reason, the local talent pool in Phoenix isn't very good.

I'll have to trust you on that one. I don't have any insider information on the Ankarlo situation at KTAR. From an outsider's perspective, they are doing the right and respectable thing.

Personally, I would prefer to have Austin Hill take over, but I'll wait to see what happens when Ankarlo's contract runs out.

KDUS? I like to listen to Kemp but Roc is the worst sports guy on the radio in the history of AZ sports talk. Even worse the Doug and that is saying a lot.
