KTAR Up Again

Let's say I'm 5 foot 8 inches and Nurse Jeff is 5 foot even. I'm still taller by eight inches - or 16% bigger than Nurse Jeff. We're not sure you're going with that runway analogy that's in pretty poor taste, but the fact is the Number One station is bigger and by a wider margin than last month!

Just pulled up the R&R ratings page again to check the math. What am I missing...

In Winter the distance between KFYI and KTAR was 1.5 shares.
In Spring the distance was 1.1 shares.
In the latest trendings it is 0.8.

Looks like Jeff has been drinking his milk and eating his veggies. Who knows maybe he'll even have hair on his chest.

KFYI is still Numero Uno...without twisting facts like The Men In Secret Underwear do. If KT'R was doing so well on 6~twenty, why are they turning it into a sports parking lot after January 1st? Last time we checked, the three existing AM sportstalkers struggle to get a combined 1.5 share. Pssst..here's a little "inside tip" for TMISU: Cards mgmt say no one can receive AM radio inside the Pink Taco (stadium). Why not simulcast their Sunday afternoon games on 92.3? Or do you really think more listeners want to hear re-runs of Meet The Press? ???

No choice now. KFYI benefits from being next to KT'R on the AM band and shares a lot of listeners. Since The Men In Secret Underwear decided to decimate the absolute best AM signal in the market by turning into a sports parking lot, KFYI will be hard placed to replace shared cume. The prime demo listeners are on FM and the sooner KFYI moves to 96~Nine the better. Unlike TMISU, KFYI can keep 5~Fifty in simulcast for another year..no need for a fifth sportstalker to chase that whopping 1.5 share!

You assume people are still using analog tuners, or up-down on their digital sets.

I would wager that most KFYI and KTAR listeners have preset buttons on their radios and know how to use them (well, maybe not KFYI listeners, who probably have their radios welded to Fox550conservotalk).

In this digital age, it's all presets. And in a marketplace where 80 percent of the listeners are on FM, and where AM is a sports/religion/jesusfreak ghetto, an FM will ahve a huge advantage.

People twisting from 620 to 550? How quaint.

Approximately 2/3 of the kTAR listening is not in the car. I don't have presets that are usable on most of my home radios.

And... where do you get your figures? The AM share in Phnoenix is 14.5, not 20.

A tangent...but perhaps it makes sense to announce in this KTAR string that Diane Arthur is leaving the station after at least a decade. (Before she was with the Biz Journal on KTAR, she was with KTAR.) She has accepted a higher paying position as City of Suprise PIO, beginning Sept. 11th.

Now lest we forget, it has been said many times on this very board that KTAR gets big ratings for its Diamondbacks and Suns games. Next year, when both are on 620, and "Newsradio KTAR" is on 92.3, what are going to happen to these ratings? Will 92.3 be in a horse race with Free FM for 20th place?

One of those will end up on 92.3 or 98.7 whenever there's a conflict, assuming they dump 860 next year.

There'll be at least two teams with broadcast contracts owned by TMISU playing at the same time as often as not: D'backs/ASU and D'backs/Cards in the fall, D'backs/Suns between March and June, and ASU/Suns during the winter. One of those games will have to end up on FM during those conflicts.

Another interruption of the string with another quasi-related tangent...Leibo guest-hosting tonight (Tuesday)... Has anyone else been a guest on KFYI and KTAR almost concurrently? Plus, he was invited to write and voice a short feature on KJZZ which aired just the other week. (Afterward, they invited him to be a guest on the local talk show, too, but he flaked out--Not a guest host, but a guest...)

P.S. luved the clip you stole today from Fox 10 on the blind girl story. great choice. Sure hope Crumy comes back soon. Than youll have at least 1 reporter back. ;D

Ok user, we get it... you and bonneville are like peas and carrots...

But need we remind you... again, KTAR must change their programming in order to stay competitive. The only thing keeping 620 afloat is their news staff. And kudos to them and Mike Anthony. But with a staff of nearly 15 news folkers, at some point all those resources had better account for something. However, with their lineup in between, KTAR will never, I repeat...never get to the top.

By the way... for those that aren't aware... the summer book is typically the one that PD's and Exec's put last on their agenda. Sept's book will give us a better indication as to how well PHX stations are doing.

a question for all...
When the numbers come out (after KTAR makes the jump to FM), how many young-ins will still be listing 92.3 as their favorite station, not realizing that it's no longer Urban? While that may be great for TMISU, on the surface, that could potentially come back to haunt them.

I hope Russ and the guys over at Bon-Bon realize the future of radio is not which frequency your on, but what you choose to put on that frequency.

and before I forget. During my drive thru the lovely city of Glendale, I heard Mike Anthony on one of his newscasts, quote a story form their newspartner...Ch. 5. In fact, I heard Diane do the same thing later in the day, and then run a sound clip. 620 and Ch. 5 are going to share resources via the web anyway...

so how is what KTAR does, any different than what KFYI has been doing???

Oh right, peas and carrots...

more like and eye for an eye...

My apology, all...I flip between 550 and 620 so often, I did not realize until the "morning after" that I was listening to KFYI when I heard Leibo...Again, sorry.
Once KTAR moves to FM, I should be able to distinguish them better! ::)

Hey chipper, uh happy, thanks for the daily dose of veggies. Now for some meat:

I was trained during my career that spring and fall are the biggest books. I believe KTAR was #4 in spring. We'll see how fall and fm match up.

You are presto righto on bon bon needing to get the stuff in between rush hours right. Rumors swirling theier about to announce someting. If they dont fix talk lineup their screwed. I'll say it again, herd they have something up their sleeves.

P.S. Loved the Fox 10 clip on the Warren arrest. What a powerful sound clip. Was that KTAR I heard reporting from Polygamyville up north? Sure will be nice when on VanBuren have their 1 reporter back from filling in for Crumster. ;)

That's funny, I have no difficulty distinguishing. One has a news department.

Agreed that KT'R has run circles around 55/FYI in news coverage recently.

Their AMD news wheel now actually has some meat in it beyond the TOH and BOH.

But they have a pi**-poor record for getting live reporter remotes on air
when they toss to them. No matter whether it's microwave link or cell phone.
"We'll get back to that story in a moment."

And then there's the time checks. ;D

I believe it was this website that reminded KT'R hosts to thank the reporters when doing live remotes. :p

Careful! You might get attacked for being a Time Geek! ;)

Jami West is a MUCH BETTER morning co-host with Network Ned. Connie Webber has all the warmth of a Circle K milk carton with her "..just the facts.." delivery.

Oh...Nurse Jeff reminded me that Bart Graves (former KFYI, former KT'R, former KPHO, former KTSP & others reporter) has left the D.O.C. He's now the PR shill for the Dems, who now have beau coup bucks thanks to Jim Pederson.

Bart left the DOC? Which probation office does he report to?
