KTAR Up Again

Abakar, who cares what a sports-talk does 12+?, the format has the best
power-ratio of all.

A better power-ratio than our 76 Gremlin Levi's Special? No waaaay! Gotta hand it to Nurse Jeff...he's done a great job of pimping our ride. Professional sports and ASU football bring a lot of revenue without constantly worrying about ratings. However the Men In Secret Underwear are taking the best AM signal in the market and turning it into a sports parking lot after the first of the year. Imagine how great KT'R-AM will sound when there ISN'T a game on. Let's see, that would be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. If you can't imagine it, then try ESPN 860, XTRA 910 or The Deuce 1060. Zzzzzzzzzzzz. And there will be game conflicts forcing one team to go on KT'R-FM or Mr Peakerman's station. No way they'll put it on 3 tower 1kw KMVP after sunset. Thursday night's Cardinals/ASU game is a great example - Cards on 620 and ASU on 92.3 at 5pm on a weekday. Brilliant NOT!

Who says they will get rid of 860? Maybe they will, maybe they won't, but if they keep it, they have enough overflow space to avoid games on FM. ESPN Deportes? Womens talk + Mercury?

And since when were there only games on weekends? Baseball games every day in Summer, with a couple of off days per month, basketball games every 2 or 3 days when the Suns are playing. Add football to that, and the national ESPN Radio games. And as for the "in between" hours? Are you going to compare 620 sports with the local crap that plops out of 1060, 860 and 910? As I understand it, it is their intent to fill 620 with local sports talk. Not all day, but I would guess mornings, afternoons and of course nights. And these aren't the Garibaldi type shows (i.e. paid infomercials disguised as crappy butt-kissing radio shows). And keep in mind the ESPN national stuff is a hell of a lot better than sporting news or Fox sports.

If what I've heard is correct, the land under the KMVP towers has been sold to a developer, so they'll have to either move the transmitter or shut the station down in the next couple of years. Will TMISU bother moving what will be their least important signal?

A signal is a signal. It may be their worst, but it's good enough as a backup. KMVP has never been intended as a moneymaker. I don't claim to have any clue what Bonneville has up their sleeve, but even if they wanted out of KMVP, wouldn't it be better to pay the money to keep a signal on the air - even just to sell it - than to let it go dark?

Either way, the benefit of moving to 92.3 isn't just the better quality audio; it's the ability to keep sports products on a strong signal, and have uninterrupted news. The 77 million is a wasteif it doesn't accomplish their primary goal. As I understand it, sports on the FM is the least desireable outcome. Maybe Cards on weekends, but nothing on weekdays.

They can multiplex 860 intro one tower at the old ice rink on Thomas Road and save on the separate rent for the KIFN tower..

Local. Yeah Right

<<<< Are you going to compare 620 sports with the local crap that plops out of 1060, 860 and 910? As I understand it, it is their intent to fill 620 with local sports talk. >>>>

I am willing to bet a rusty Gremlin that sportsKTAR will be nearly 75% off the bird. Mike+Mike in AM is a sure bet. A couple of syndicated shows during the day. Maybe the afternoon drivetime will be local. On game nights post-game will be local sports yak -- sorta like now, where they take 1 phone call and call it "DiamondTalk" or "SunsTalk". On non-game nights, satellite kicks in @8PM. Guaranteed. They can barely excite people to call post game.

Six hours of local. 2PM-8PM. Cheap and easy.

Currently they call 860, ESPN860, not KVMP860. "sportsKTAR" will be "espnKTAR".

Whatever 620 becomes, you can't put it in the same boat as the current 860, 910, or 1060. Those other signals are crap. The name KMVP means nothing. It needs to be called "ESPN Radio 860" because that is a brand people know. People know KTAR's calls as a news and sports station. Among sports fans, they know it as a sports station.

If you are Bonneville, and you are flipping 620 to all sports, why would you lose a major part of its sports identity, the 620 sportsline? If you're building a true sports station, you start with what you have and build from there. My guess: Mike and Mike will stay, but be relegated to their live hours (done by 6 or 7?), they will have a local morning show (you can't sell ESPN's mid-day programming as "morning drive". Probably ESPN for mid-days, a local afternoon drive (same reason as AM drive) then sportsline till 9 or 10, followed by ESPN until the following morning.

The post game shows take calls, when there are calls to be taken. When it comes to post game calls, "the buck stops here" (with the team). It doesn't matter how great your host is, or what he says... if the team stinks, and has stunk for the last 20 games, people aren't going to call. During the playoffs, and the months leading ito it, the Suns post game show had plenty of calls.

KTAR people have made a big deal about keeping the call letters for both stations, because they want to build a brand... two stations under one umbrella. ESPN content is great... they will surely have national sportscenter mixed in with local sportscenter... but they won't be handing over the controls to bristol.

No, they can't. Both stations are non-directional during the day but have different patterns at night. 620's nulls are to the NW and East to protect Portland and Dallas, respectively. 860 has to null to the SW to protect Tijuana.

Sure they can. 860 can install active wave defibrilators in Aisle 4 of the Home Depot, using the rebar and those big metal racks - if tuned properly - to protect Tijuana.

Actually, given the fact that Tower Plaza has those big nasty signs warning against illegal aliens seeking work there, isn't Tijuana already protected?

I thought a condition of affiliation with ESPN Radio was to use their name in the station's branding. My guess is that KTAR will be forced to call themselves ESPN Radio 620 or it'll be ESPN Radio 1060 in the future.

Mike & Mike is already live (3-7 or 4-8 AM depending on DST) on 860. I'll guess that won't change unless they cut it off at 6 AM for a local show to compete with XTRA.

A local AM-drive show would be a good idea, say from 6-10 AM. Despite Jeff Munn's bleatings to the contrary, nobody says "Colin Cowherd said what?!?" because few people listen to that show. AM sports talk is Bickley & Jurecki on XTRA until KTAR comes up with something interesting as an alternative. What are Vince Marotta or Jeff Kennedy doing nowadays? Hiring Bruce Jacobs away from KFYI and putting him back on sports where he belongs would be an improvement for both stations. ;D

I think they'll keep Dan Patrick middays, and then add a local PM-drive show to compete with Gambo & Ash. If TMISU have half a collective brain cell, they'll hire Bob Kemp away from what's left of KDUS.

Then go to the 620 Sportsline at 7 PM when there's no game.

The post game shows take calls, when there are calls to be taken. When it comes to post game calls, "the buck stops here" (with the team). KDUS got plenty of calls after Cards games, and nobody can say that team didn't stink. ;D

ESPN content is great... they will surely have national sportscenter mixed in with local sportscenter... but they won't be handing over the controls to bristol.

KMVP is doing local updates now, right before Sportscenter every 20 minutes. That'll continue, of course, but I do think they'll be ESPN Radio outside of 6-10 AM and 3-10 PM when there are no games going on.

What if Bonneville would be able to get Chuck and Vince from The EDGE to do mornings or pm drive on the new sports radio "espn radio" 620??? Now that be something. Would Premiere be willing to sever ties with XTRA Sports to get Jim Rome clearance on a much better signal at 620 am?

Clear Channel owns both Premier and XTRA Sports 910. The chance of Rome being on 620 is less than zero. Not that TMISU would want to bother with Rome's tired stuck-in-the-90s act anyway.

"I thought a condition of affiliation with ESPN Radio was to use their name in the station's branding. My guess is that KTAR will be forced to call themselves ESPN Radio 620 or it'll be ESPN Radio 1060 in the future."

KNBR/SF is the ESPN affiliate and doesn't brand as such. It also runs very little network programming.

If it weren't for the brokered sports crap migrating to 1060, they wouldn't even be stick around to be the fourth-tier sports station with only KSLX's Coyotes leftovers for PBP. But perhaps 860 could take them back (now that ESPN is satisfied) and fill the remaining hours with the Sports Byline network or some such. :D

ESPN's experiment in local programming had little success... IMHO, they'd be wise to leave the local scene to Xtra and KDUS (maybe) and focus on ESPN's superior national coverage, like they've done the past few months. Lest I'm mistaken, ESPN 860 is currently down to just the Bunker to Bunker show on Saturdays and Zzzzzzz From the Wild on Sunday mornings as far as local shows go (not counting the Sunday morning Mormon simulcast as a "local" show).

IIRC

ESPN stations have the choice to be "branded" stations or not. If they choose to be branded stations (IE, ESPN RADIO 1000-Chicago) they MUST carry Mike and Mike in the Morning ,Dan Patrick, and as much of Gamenight as local obligations ( nominally PBP) allows. About all branding gets them is a ride on the network coatails....no ESPN swag was forthcoming when it became a branded station.

Nurse Jeff and I were thinkin about how great Sports Parking Lot 6~20 will sound this time next year. D'backs 20 games out of a playoff position; Suns on break; ASU playing non-conference ball; Gov Janet doing color on a Mercury game, and the Cards' new head coach saying this will be a transition year. The Nurse and I are starting to have a McBland withdrawl moment anticipating all the excitement. :p

One important difference: ESPN 1000 in Chicago is a Disney O&O and will remain so after the sale of their news/talk stations (WLS, WABC, etc.) to Cumulus is completed. KTAR & KMVP aren't and won't be.

Janet doing a Mercury game? ;D ;D

Not that there's anything wrong with that......

Note, I had to re-register (I added a period to my handle) as I had a computer crash and lost my password and the password retrieval system on this board does not work, and despite 3 emails to the administrators, they never responded. Pretty sloppy management here at this board.
