I will happily agree with you about Jay's weekend show. He does a good job.

But he's just not as juevenile as Dumber & Dumbest in PMD ;)

Indeed! And he has good taste in pie, no? ;)

We hope so...the thought of dining on vine ripened humbles has the Buckeye Boyz salivating!

There really isn't anything redeeming or edifying about much of either station's programming, outside of some weekend shows, like Jay's on the weekend.

Intelligent discussion? More like discussing algebra with a poo flinging chimp…

Jay is a straight shooter, I have poked fun at him, he does a good job, but, look at weekend radio....KFYI does contractual replays of Rush and Sean, has a woo woo psychic fraud on, sells 4 prime hours to Dr. Bob Quack and his 75% ad content, puts angry white guy Broomhead and screechy Gilberg on, and, when they have a dead moment, they run Kim Kommando 9 hours late and run Handle a day and a half late.

KTAR on the weekend is mostly (real)doctors and gardeners and home repair, but the Meet the Press rerun is good, and, sometimes Femino doesnt' make a complete fool of himself.

For real fun, tune to the debt guys on 960, you can practically feel them tugging at your pants, begging you to come to their scaminars, or 1100 with the pet show, and the host sounds like Christopher Guest doing the very fey director in Waiting for Guffman.

Weekends were made for Ipodsl

As I say about the demise of the Phoenix Coyotes, who gives a flying puck? Both KFYI and KTAR are right-wing pig pens with no diversity in thought or programming. And as a result, they ultimately reflect the failings of terrestrial radio; i.e., not broadcasting in the public interest. For instance, neither station has even the slightest lefty foil on-air. For Christ's sake, even Fixed News employed Hannity and the ever-flaccid Colmes .

These stations merely talk to themselves in the mirror 24/7. How boring and inconsequential.

NEXT!

Make that 10 hours late, and KFYI doesn't even carry the third hour. Barry's
much better half is live 7-10am, but of course we all know what's on then. ::)

Finally, someone in Phoenix points out the obvious! :D

I thought that I was the only one who noticed! It sure would be nice to have some fair and balanced (and THOUGHTFUL) talk. Oh well, what should I expect when one of the major universities in the state refuses to give a sitting President an HONORARY degree? ::)

As one who attended ASU and discovered how liberal [most of] the staff and professors truly are, you cannot pin the refusal to grant an honorary degree on conservatives. Crow is as liberal as they come and an idiot for not bestowing an honorary degree on President Obama.

Btw, another "obvious" observation: progressive/liberal/left-wing talk failed in Phoenix. And failed miserably!! Why would Clear Channel or Bonneville cater to the left if the left doesn't support their own talkers? Hmmmmm...food for thought.

AMEN! How sympathietic or empathetic are the local "full service" stations to what the public is going through in this economy by serving up the relentless rant of these uninformed, self-serving, self-satisfying blow-hards? Beck v Rush? Savage v Hannity? Who cares? For the national folks it's all about their next book deals. For the local squeeky-voiced wannabe's its trying to be like them....without the education or talent. Please. Progressive may not have worked here (signal or whatever) but can't their be an intelligent moderate to discuss real issues, and just real everyday life experiences withou having to ATTACK anyone to get ratings? Their time has passed.

We didn't want to give MLK a holiday either. People here don't like being strong armed or going along with the crowd - pretty much regardless of political persuasion.

Uh, No, Ev Mecham didn't want to give a holiday to MLK because he felt the way Babbit did it was not constitutional. And Ev was a racist old coot.

But, "We", the voters of Arizona voted for the holiday, at the time, the ONLY state in the US that put the holiday up to a popular vote.

Don't be painting the people of Arizona with your broad brush, tell the truth, as it really happened.

OK, then it should also be mentioned--and I can't say whether or not it influenced
any voters--that the state was being indirectly blackmailed by the NFL, as in:
"no holiday, no Super Bowl."

lol agreed. it's like cleaning out a garbage disposal or a toilet. static wins hands down. barely young is still alive? amazing.

I seem to recollect, although I could not find any specific sources, that the general populace of the state at that time did not support an MLK holiday. It wasn't until the NFL moved the Stupid Bowl (and promised us another future bowl) that the holiday was approved. I'm absolutely sure Daffy Duck would have been granted his own holiday under those same circumstances.

Follow the money trail......

Ev was an old coot and he was a p.r. disaster, but.... Babbitt declared a PAID state holiday without going through the legislature, which is REQUIRED by state law. Mecham could have let it go, but Babbitt DID violate the law. Babbitt knew what he was doing. He wanted AZ to have a King holiday (which was the right idea), but he didn't think he could muscle it through the legislature. He certainly didn't try, though I think at some point in his nine years as Gov. he could have made it happen. Mecham dang sure should have handled the matter differently, but he botched it and screwed his whole tenure as Gov. right then and there.

The legislature putzed around with this for a few years and finally sent it to the ballot. The normally sane NFL decided to threaten AZ voters by telling us that Phoenix would never get a Super Bowl unless AZ got a King holiday. Frankly, it's not the NFL's job to tell Arizona voters how to vote and voters narrowly rejected a paid King day in 1990. But... in 1992 it was put on the ballot again, and with the NFL pointedly told to shut up, voters approved the King day.

Arizona, by the way, is one of a handful of state to have a statewide voter-approved MLK holiday.

Would the outcome be the same if the NFL told us they'd move the Cardinals if voters turned down the holiday?!

Not entirely true. The Diane Rehm show is guaranteed to keep you awake. Clawing desperately at the windshield in vain hope of escape, but awake.
