The Format? Nobody at Bonneville has heard of The Format or heard one of their songs on another local station? They were played regularly enough in this market for Zia (who *is* mentioned) to have invited Nate back for an in-store.
I expect a local news/talk station to have some familiarity with the story they're reporting. They could have Wiki'd it: "Fun (stylized as fun.) is an American indie rock band based in New York City that was formed by Nate Ruess, formerly of The Format." Click on the entry for The Format: "The Format was an American indie rock band formed by Nate Ruess and Arizona native Sam Means." That took me less than minute. Would it have been too much to add a few words to the no-longer-airing script?
Honestly i wouldn't have been able to follow along with those details (and I'm somewhat of a music nerd). All I know they have a couple of really lame Pop records that get played on every station (including Bonneville's "The Peak").
