KTCK only two towers lit up at night

Why is it that at night only two of the four KTCK towers are litup? Some body on the trail with me the other day asked me that as we were looking at them. Is that to show which towers are being used at night or what?

No, the FCC and FAA only require "end" towers to be lit in a multi-array now. IF the station can show that no air traffic would be endangered or similar, they can cut down the number of lamps they need to run. Some two way towers that are spaced close together can do that too...One gets lit at night, the other doesnt (but they must meet a max spacing, etc).
I know a number of AMs with multiple towers that are doing that now...it not only saves on changing tower lamps but it cuts their electric bill.
NOW if KTCK have not gotten such approval, it could be they have two towers that are out (of lamps that is ;)

LED lamps are proving to be a better alternative for tower lighting, given they are cheaper to run and last longer.

1190's night site in Rockwall has only 6 of its 12 towers lit.

Oh and I noticed KKDA AM has a top beacon out - has been for a few weeks now.

Yes Robert, you seen one of those LED beacons up close? durn near blind ya! We just swapped most of ours out on both our towers... I was driving past the antenna farm at the hill, you can definitely tell which are LEDs and which are still lights.

Well, up close if you count the LED headlights in new cars today.

Our tower has LED's as well, and I can see them flashing at night, at my apartment complex. That's a distance of about 5 or 6 miles, at least.
