I find that interesting because the colleges affiliation is Church Of Christ, while the state-ran KNTU up the road in Denton is micromanaged by a bunch of old farts who want to hear coltrane in continious rotation. The affiliatilon is with the Disciples of Christ (Christian)
and not the church of Christ. The nearest church of Christ
radio facility is KACU in Abilene. Not sure if Alexander
Campbell would approve of the programming on the latter.

KNTU from 1977 - 1980 had the best sound, and it was ran by students. One student even went out and bought Jams jingles. George Gimarc,Dave Barnett,and many other notables were a part of its sound back then. In 1980 they went Jazz to promote the school of music program,notably the one'o'clock lab band,( which has won several Grammys BTW) The PD, News Director, Public Service Director,Public Affairs Director,were all under graduate paid positions. The station manager was a paid Graduate student position. Sports play by play was also done by students . It all changed in the 90's with very few students in directorships. They are ft positions,at least the Sta mgr and PD are. The music is ok for jazz lovers and the market is there,but KNTY wa the best in the late 70's.

KTCU had some visionary student leaders in the mid-to-late-90s that forged a strong "indie rock" format there on evenings and weekends. They were a top reporter in the CMJ (College Music Journal) and had some great specialty shows ("In The Red" on Sunday nights and the Good Show, which still continues to this day). Most importantly, they brought a lot of music to the airwaves that had no other outlet in D/FW.
Unfortunately, under some pressure from the school's Board of Trustees they got more conservative over the past 3-4 years and converted many of the alt-rock dayparts to the "Choice 1000", a ripoff of Jack FM's iPod-style format featuring songs that everyone has heard a million times. Aside from their still-great sports programming and their classical offerings during middays (including the Cliburn Competition coverage), they no longer offer a really unique voice in the market.
I've heard rumors that they are planning a Dallas-area translator (I think they still have an app with the FCC), which would be great if they would allow for a return to their mid-90s alt-rock heyday - they could quickly become the go-to source for new music in North Texas.
