As a fan of obscure, eclectic music, I have been pleasantly surprised lately by KTCU. I hear a lot of stuff I've never heard before by people I couldn't identify, mixed in with familiar artists. The other day I heard the jock segue from a song I couldn't name into a Rolling Stones song; both were in the same key. Today I heard a Willie Nelson tune; not Whiskey River, but Grave Digger. Cool.
Also, the processing is light, not compressed like so many commercial music stations.
And if it gets too wierd, I'll flip over to KNTU or KNON.
The kids are alright!
 
Thats why ive listened to 'em for years...
 
There has bee too much dang country on there as of late. My gosh they are weak in Plano. If my antenna is not pointed within15 degrees, I don't get them at all. And I get at least two, maybe three other stations if I point it other directions.
 
Hiring a real radio guy has made a big difference. Russell Scott, a long time radio man has done a really nice job there.
 
I hate to sound like an idiot, but where is KTCU on the dial? I wanna check 'em out!!

88.7 They have 10,000W, but a short stick so they are in bad shape by the time you get to Dallas.
 
Russell once showed me the Deal of Death that some idiot at KTCU signed away in 1990, yielding nearly all their Dallas County coverage to KEOM when KEOM did their upgrade to 61kW and recontoured to accommodate KNTU's upgrade. KTCU is permanently landlocked over that deal now, and apparently let that extra real estate go for free. So no surprise that Bruce can't get the station much in Collin County.

Surprisingly, they do fairly well in the car - it has the adaptive IF tecnology and is super sensitive. I never get splatter from KEOM, and only occasional dropouts when it is replaced by KZLO. When Pioneer says "supertuner", they mean it. As long as you pay for the 3D version, and not just the 3.

How could a nationally known university with a broadcast journalism program, with a huge list of alumi ranging from Bob Schieffer to Icky Twerp (Bill Camfield) give up such a HUGE coverage area to first adjacent spillover from a Kindergarten to Grade 12 local school district "let's play DJ" station?

Guess it's like the dozens of 500 to 1000-watt daytime AM stations that were on the high priority list to get a
10,000 watt expanded band station, and didn't apply for it.
