KTDY 99.9 HD Audio Quality

B

buttonpuncher

I was down near Lafayette buttonpunching the radio and landed on KTDY's HD-1 and the audio was way too bright.

It has so much high-end it almost sounds like they have the 75uS pre-emphasis turned on somewhere in the chain feeding the HD, even though this isn't supposed to be done on the HD side. Or, whoever set the processing has lost their HF hearing and/or likes it this way???

Anyone know what's up with this?

Its either something in their encoding, or your tuners chipset, I have 2 HD (Yamaha HT Receiver and JVC vehicle deck)radios and only one (The JVC) exibits the problem you are refering to on 99.9. Without being too technical, I beleive its a flaw in the spectral band replication, which is what recreates the high frequencies lost in the compressed data stream. I have had HD2 stations in other cities have this problem, and HD2 stations wouldnt have preemphasis in their air chain.

What kind of HD radio do you have?

It's an inexpensive Dual XHD6420 that was given to me.

I get your theory as to why this is happening, have encountered similar dealing with HE-AAC streaming and it makes sense.

But why is this happening on my radio (and one of yours) only on KTDY? Every other station I listened to regularly, Red River, KRVS & KEDM are okay. Could it be something in KTDY's encoder, its settings, or SW version?

Did you really mean specifically "HD2" in your post, or any HD channel? KTDY only has HD1.

I was pointing out that ive had the bright issue with some HD2 stations which tend to have their own processing independent of the main HD1 stream and usually wouldnt have any pre-emphasis in the airchain set-up since they are not broadcast on analog.
