KTEA, Cambria Becomes KMGQ

Some of you on the Central Coast may have noticed that KTEA changed calls a few weeks ago to KMGQ. The station has an LMA with two new owners and a new format: 70's & 80's AC. As a transition they have been playing Perry Como along with Depeche Mode.

It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Cambria must be the most "overed radio town" in the nation -- if not the State. 4 local radio signals for a community - that is not even an incorporated city of about 6,000 persons. I say -- drop in another class A -- and Mr. Kampshire -- can file for aid -- as a disaster area.

I guess you haven't been to Cambria, many stations from SLO, Pismo Beach, Santa Maria, Atascadero, El Paso De Robles, Templeton, and Santa Barbara are blocked by the mountain range, Cambria only gets those that are on top of the ridge and the 4 locals mentioned, and those 4 stations also serve Morro Bay and Cayucos.

In a bizarre twist, Jim Kampschorer seized control of KMGQ over the weekend of Oct. 20 and locked Post Rock Communications out. Now the station is back to playing its standards format. Expect a nasty lawsuit to come out of this.

No big deal. There was no FCC 314 ever filed. It's just a business deal gone bad. And most likely -- it would have happened down the road. Cambria is not a very good radio market for 3 or more FM stations. Cambria is just a little Las Vegas. A town in which you can loose your money fast -- on a long shot gamble. All of the other "drop ins" were done to get back at the old KTEA. J K "Baited" the owners of the old 94.9 - KOTR for over a full year. He insisted that he was interested in buying KOTR. Lack of candor.

They actually had an LMA and Post Rock Communications apparently was fulfilling its obligations. Post Rock also had advertising contracts in place for KMGQ. So, like I said, unless they reach some kind of settlement, expect a lawsuit. KTEA had a signal that got into much of San Luis Obispo and I know Jim had listeners there.
