KTEN picks up ABC in Sherman/Denison

http://www.rbr.com/tv-cable/23116.html

Lockwood Broadcast Group already has NBC and CW as DTV signals on KTEN-TV Sherman, TX-Ada, OK. Now it’s adding ABC as well on digital channel 10.3.

The new affiliation agreement was announced by Dave Hanna, President, Lockwood Broadcast Group, and John Rouse, Senior Vice President, Affiliate Relations, ABC Television Network.

The new channel is being branded “ABC Texoma.” Lockwood recently announced that the launch is being partially funded by a grant from the Denison (TX) Development Alliance because of the new jobs it will create. The broadcast company itself is spending millions to expand its facility.

“We are very pleased to be teaming with Lockwood Broadcasting and look forward to the launch of ABC Texoma,” said Rouse. “Localism plays an integral role in ABC’s far-reaching relationships with television stations nationwide, and we’re pleased to utilize the benefits of the digital spectrum to bring our ABC Network programming, complemented by locally-produced news broadcasts, to better serve viewers in the Sherman/Ada area.”

Does this mean they'll be hiring a completely separate news staff, or will they just simulcast KTEN news? They already do a newscast on their CW channel at 9 with the same people.

My guess is the first one. Their newscast is far inferior to the other one in town (KXII) and is awful even by small market standards. Their sports anchor only works four days a week and does taped features for the three days he's off. There is no backup sports guy.

Why would they hire a new staff for the ABC subchannel?
Seems to me it would be cheaper and easier to just simulcast their news on both sub-channels.

They've promised additional newscasts ... but there's no way they'll have separate news teams. Too much money. They'll probably do what KBMT (ABC/NBC) in Beaumont does. Pretty much all the ABC signal's (12.1) newscasts air on both stations, except the 5 and 6 p.m. shows, and then there are 2 NBC-only (12.2) newscasts: 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
