KTFM shifting to Top 40?

I noticed KTFM has added Jason DeRulo, Ke$ha, Jay Sean, Black Eye Peas and Lady Gaga. It appears they might be slowly transitioning from Hot AC to Top 40....Good Move. Although, I have might doubts in KTFM being successful with Landis programming the station. Take a look at his previous formats.

How hard can it be to program a Top 40 station? If it's on the charts, it's on the playlist. If it's near the top of the charts, it plays every 2-3 hours. Every weeknight you take requests and do a Top 5 countdown show to see if there are any local favorites you've overlooked.

How could anyone possibly screw that up?

I would like to see KTFM go directly at Mix. That would make for a damn good radio war. (IF IT WAS DONE CORRECTLY) KTFM would have a leg up if they had all their staff local.

Easy. The charts are based on airplay, since thay can't be based on sales alone. The airplay charts are based on a weighted average of CHRs in different market sizes with different AQH averages. So in a very Hispanic market, the chart could be way off since there are many urban-leaning CHRs contribuiting spins to the chart for songs that might be inappropriate. Or too many "Fargo and Minneapolis" type alternative or rock leaning cuts.

Knowing how to measure reaction in your own market, knowing what make the best kinds of adds, and finding out how songs track are critical. That is not easy today, and the national charts alone will send a station way off in the wrong direction.

Paying much attention to the request lines is the first danger sign; that kind of listener is often not a trendsetter for the passive listeners and the bulk of any audience will never call.

This is a very poor way to program a station. In fact, I believe this is how Landis was programming 94.1.

Everyone has been so hard on Landis, leave him alone. I for one think that going this route would be a great idea.

Being a former KTFM jock myself I too also know the risk involved. If it is done correctly, they have the potential to put a dent into Mix's audience.

But being a former KXXM jock too, I know KXXM wont take it lightly and will make adjustments if needed.

Bottom line, this would be a great radio battle.

I know that I overlooked music research. Mea culpa. My approach would be very bottom-line friendly, though, and I imagine that cash-strapped and bank-owned BMP is about as focused on costs as an owner could be.

ktfm going all out top 40 would be absolutely stupid. there's enough top 40.

theres an audience for hot ac...but why not go alternative? kiss is vulnerable now with a horrible ppm start. why not go alternative and watch kiss screw up what they've got. in no time you will own rock in san antonio. that 97.7 station will never own rock. its not there to win.

94.1 THE EDGE...san antonio's rock alternative. landis could even voice the station. perfect pipes for alternative.

It would be "absolutely stupid" to go after the #2 station in market?....Yeah, very stupid. Not sure what makes you believe that Alternative would be a good fit in SA. In numerous markets where PPM's are in place, the Alternative format hasn't extactly lit up the PPM's. In market after market Top 40 is a winner. However, with that being said, I don't believe Landis has what it takes to run a successful Top 40 station. Landis just hasn't understood this market since day one. Every radio station he's landed on has turned into caca. :D Just going by his history here in SA.

What exactly are you smoking to think that an alternative could take down KISS?

id rather have a format hole to myself (alternative) than be second or third (chr) choice. kxxm and kbbt are both chr stations. ktfm would be third. not smart. alternative does fine. look at the buzz in houston. write about that in your blog.

Well I agree that there is a hole. And the true alternative fan suffers. But I don't see such a station taking down KISS. Also you have to consider that is this not Houston. That city is not only much larger, but has a far different mentality than this city does. I somewhat agree that a SA alternative station would be popular here, but not pull #1 type numbers. But then again.... I could be wrong. I've been wrong before.

By the way thanks for the suggestion. I will consider it. At the moment I am working on something as far as my MYSA blog is concerned.

KBBT and KXXM are not of the same. While they both target the same demos they are completely different. IMO, KTFM should be similar to KAMP or B96.
