KTKR 760 Midday Programming Question

When the Astros have 1pm starts during the week, does KTKR air the Astros game or do they air regularly scheduled programming?

On April 17 at 2:35pm, I'll be able to answer this question on my own.

I'm unsure if KTKR aired the Astros-Rangers game at 1:10pm on April 3 because I was at the game.

The silence to the question would seem to indicate one of two things 1- nobody listens to KTKR, 2-nobody listens to the Stros ;D

There aren't many sports fans on this message board.

It was worth a shot...

If history is an indicator, Ticket does not run weekday daytime games unless its a holiday.
Sounds right. I don't ever remember hearing games of any kind on Ticket on a weekday.

KGNB is probably your best bet for picking up the Astros in the SA area on a weekday.

KGNB no longer carries the 'Stros.

As far as tune-in radio is concerned, it is blacked out on the Internet. Alternate programming is aired on KBME and other stations along the Astros Radio Network.

You can purchase a subscription to MLB Audio or download the "At Bat" app. A yearly subscription is $20 a season. At that point, you have access to all MLB games and "home team" broadcasts.

Thanks for the Astros Radio Network update, Kent. My list was missing some stations.

Has KTKR been airing the games? I'm in Cuero tonight and can't pick it up tonight.

I'm able to get 1340 KVNN out of Victoria, although the reception isn't great.

Thank you, WhatdoIKnow. Do you know if KTKR will be airing Astros weekday afternoon games? They have about two a month, but it would be nice to know.

I was able to pull in KTKR (in and out, never consistently) from Cuero last night and they were airing the Astros vs Mariners game.

Just as I thought, KTKR is not carrying Astros weekday day games.

So far, KTKR is doing a poor job as an Astros Radio Network affiliate.

If you're not going to carry the games, don't dub yourself as an affiliate.

KMAC was SA's last great Astros affiliates. Although I don't recall how they handled it when the Astros collided with the Saturday afternoon opera.

Which station was KMAC?

If I had to venture a guess, I would say either 630 or 930.

When I moved to SA in '98, KENS 1160 was the Astros' affiliate. They did a good job covering the 'Stros, but the nighttime reception was weak.

In 2003 and '04, KLUP 930 carried the 'Stros, and in 2005 KTKR became an affiliate.

In 2007, KSLR 630 carried the 'Stros until 2009 when 92.5 The Patriot picked them up and carried them until they flipped formats at the end of last season.

I think WOAI covered the Astros back in the 60s and 70s.

I know WWL 870 covered them until the 80s.

Anybody who listens to an Astros game nowadays should receive some sort of monetary compensation. The team is dreadful, struggling to draw attendance, no longer playing familiar National League rivals and their listenership probably reflects that.

Somewhere, maybe in the Business Journal recently, I saw the average TV ratings in San Antonio for Astros games and Rangers games in 2012. The Rangers were drawing a 1.6 rating and the Astros were drawing 0.2. If the radio ratings are proportional, they're lucky that any station wanted to carry their games. SA is not a baseball town. Maybe the Astros ownership is paying for carriage?

Oh no? After all these years, Henry the Puffy Taco still rounds the bases at Missions games. Trouble is he can't make it to home plate without being tagged by some kid! ;D

1) The team is dreadful

Yes. But true MLB fans support their team by listening no matter what their record is.

2) Struggling to draw attendance

Has nothing to do with radio listenership

3) No longer playing traditional NL rivals

Most Astros fans are happy to be out of the non-sexy NL Central which consists of boring teams such as Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, St Louis and Chicago. We should have never been thrown into the NL Central. We should have stayed in the NL West back in 1994, as those were our true rivals. At least now we're in the same division as the Texas Rangers, a team that is only four hours away.

4) Maybe the Astros ownership is paying for the carriage?

Nope. While some MLB teams do pay stations to broadcast games, a la the Texas Rangers, the Houston Astros do not. KVET's PD asked the Astros to pay them to ensure all 162 games were carried, but the Astros denied KVET. KVET's retaliation was to broadcast local programming during the day and air Longhorn Softball instead of Astros Baseball.
