KTKY Refugio

Just noticed a CP modification for this station, which has been in the process of getting re-licensed to Taft, just outside of Corpus Christi. If it's built the station would have a robust signal over the Coastal Bend. But the questions are when was the last time KTKY was actually on the air, and what are the chances it's actually going to do the upgrade on 106.5? After all, the current CP was issued several years ago and nothing has really happened in the meantime.

KTKY was on the air up until a few months ago. It was broadcasting in Refugio, TX at low power with an STA. The owners secured a deal last week with American Tower to build on the top of tower 1048527 in Ingleside, TX. That is the same tower that stations KKWV, KKPN, KPUS, and KAJE broadcast from. They are waiting on American Tower to remove all the unused antennas and feed lines that go up to the top of the tower where the new antenna for KTKY will be. Once this is completed KTKY "should" and notice how I emphasize should lol...be ready to be built and put on the air. They are shooting for a launch date of sometime in July. We shall see. It's missed many other predicted time frames before. But they are running out of time to build and they did sign a contract with American Tower so I'm pretty sure it's going to be on the air really soon. The station is currently for sale or they will also do an LMA. Asking price is pretty high though. I'd rather spend 1.2 million on a C1 that's rumored to also be for sale for the same price in Corpus Christi.

Thanks, it's all coming back to me now. We had a discussion about the station last year, and it was noted that they had lost their antenna site. Thus they were on the air with 150 watts from a 40-foot tower in Refugio, so no wonder nobody in Corpus Christi noticed. If ever there were a station (or frequency) that was snake-bit, KTKY would be in the top ten. I'm betting they miss the target launch date again, maybe by several months.

Anyone one have any idea of the format this station will have in Corpus?

Last I heard they're looking to do an LMA to keep it on the air. Some here may know some stuff about their terms and the like. A call the the number on the licensee would get info, I would suspect.

The station has changed call letters; it's now KYRK. The change was effective April 26th.

A little birdie told me that the guy LMAing the station is a guy who got canned from two other groups here in Corpus Christi. Not going to mention his name on here but the format is a weirder Jake FM type format that's going to have a lot of classic rock. Artist like Chicago, The Stones, The Eagles, Bryan Adams, Elton John, ZZ Top, Journey, Foreigner, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, and REO Speedwagon to name a few. It's going to be called 106.5 The Shark and the moniker is "Killer Hits from the 60's, 70's, and 80's"

I think I know who you're talking about. I was there when he quit from one job. He had it out with our idiot GM (who was fired a month or so later) and then I believe he quit the next job because the company owed him a bunch of money. If that's going to be the format--should be interesting if it has any impact

And since I've heard this from no less than three sources, today...

http://samplehour.com

and like they said in "The Hunt for Red October"...

"And I was never here"

I see that he's edit the site and deleted all the "from the guy who brought you Jake FM and debut at #1... blah blah blah" stuff off it.

Just out of curiosity, I did a little asking around to some people who might know what's going on. I'm told this whole Shark thing is a decoy and the format is likely to be HOT AC with the name Y-1065. Your Music. Your Generaition There is a definate hole in this market for a good gold based Hot AC

one could only hope

But I think the weird classic rock Jake format might be the real deal. I heard this from the actual owner two months ago when he was setting up all the LMA details. He wouldn't say for sure but did say it was some sort of rock format. I specifically asked him if it was going to be either Hot AC or CHR and he said definitely not those. So I guess we shall see...

I don't see them having studios and equipment built and ready to go in a little over a month though. I don't think there's even a budget for that. I'm thinking just with the board, stl's, EAS, and automation they're already looking at spending almost $20K. I think what's going to happen is that come July if the station is ready to go on the air there's going to be a computer sitting on the floor at the transmitter site playing music, liners, and legal id's with no real studios. I don't see the actual studios being built for another 3-4 months (maybe longer).

I hit up someone who's very close to what's going on today. They told me there's still some debate going on about the format. Also found out that this seems to be the real deal. The person who's doing the LMA sounds like he's setting things up to buy the station. I guess he's already leased office/studio space, ordered all the studio stuff, got all the engineering stuff ordered etc. Maybe I was being snowed, but I don't think so. I know this guy's situation and he might just could pull this off. Guess will find out soon enough. I am hoping it's a good HOT AC...there's enough of that Classic Rock stuff in the market already

That makes sense, because why would they change the calls to "KYRK". However I also heard today that the Shark package was sent to at least 2 different advertisers.

Since it's Scott Holt, he has a pretty good idea about the beginnings of Jake. And that would be a marketable plus. I don't know if They would send out a ruse to potential adveretisers. (Although I believe they were preselling a top 40 variant that they were hoping to put on when Scott was at Badlands and they were looking to buy/LMA 109.9.

106.9 Got a row high on the keypad I see. Sorry

When I first saw the calls a few weeks ago I thought KYRK was going to be something along the lines as "Your Rock...."

Maybe the K is for Killer as in their moniker (Killer Hits...)

Your Rock Killer?? lol

Ok An Update.

KYTK will remain a property fo the struggling "Pacific Broadcasting of Misourri". No change of ownership has been files.

Scott Holt (of Convergent and Restless fame) and Ryan Kruger {iirc} (Who we don't recall) are the pricipals of Bogey Broadcasting, llc.

Address is 4639 Everhart #102. An on site inspection looks like it could work for sales offices and studios with a size of 1000+ square feet on the first floor in former real estate office now moved to the 2nd (Of Two) floors.

Windows are blacked out, but no sign of occupancy, yet.

STL shot would be through an 8 story building. Look for a T-1 or other audio relay.

Now comes the fun of instaling a directional antenna on a tower ABOVE 4 other stations.

BTW, What the heck is up with the null towards the Gulf of Mexico?

Anyone???

Bueller?
