KTKZ Upgrade Coming

A

Guest
I am a local blogger here in Sacramento (www.cahsconservative.blogspot.com), so I know some local talk hosts.

Last night I recieved a tip from Eric Hogue that KTKZ will be undergoing an upgrade on September 19. He did not say what it would be, though. He said that the upgrade "Would mean a million more people will be able to hear KTKZ's lineup." He also said that it will be more than just a slight uptick in wattage.

Could 710 and 1380 swap positions on the dial? Will Salem buy another fringe station?

BTW, in addition to being a political nut I have at least a mild interest in radio. I've read this board for quite a while. It's very informative and interesting.

Perhaps they'll simulcast 1380 on 105.5 instead of rebroadcasting the fish.
______________

Not that Salem really cares, but they lost their audience
in very Conservative Republican Nevada County when they sold
KCEE to Bustos. KTKZ's signal is useless, presunrise, up
there and their present daytime signal is pretty weak as
well. BTW, they're really doing something novel and, perhaps,
a little deceitful with the KCEE website...suggesting to
people that they haven't gone Spanish language...re-directing
folks to 103.9 which right now is religous programming. So
just maybe they ARE planning to simulcast KTKZ over there.
Worth looking at their website. Please pardon if I have gotten
frequency wrong and ignore monikers. I'm out of state for
another 10-days and having only nominal contact.
______________

Salem has sure made a lot of changes recently so who knows. I could be mistaken, since I've only heard this second hand, that Salem requires their strongest AM in any of their markets be religious programming. If that’s the case, then what you've heard in a rumor…

I guess we'll all wait with baited breath on September 19th.
______________

Well, it must be something like that, as KTKZ has no facilities upgrade applications on file with the FCC:

Here's what you get if you go the KCEE website:

------
¡Sí, Hablamos inglés!

You may have heard that we are a Spanish speaking station.
Well, as much as we love the Spanish language...
we are an English speaking radio station.

So if you are interested in hearing great music (in English)
then you've come to the right place.

103.9 FM
-----

When you click you are moved to the website for 105.5, The
Fish. Hmmmmmmm....

Now I gotta go look at the FCC website to see who 103.9 is!
If you're reading this, check back in a few minutes and I'll
edit in whatever I find.
______________

That can't be true.

News/Talk KRLA is their strongest AM in LA.

Actually Religious/Talk is on a nice FM signal at 99.5 with the KKLA calls

Salem just swapped the KKFS 105.5 and KVMG 103.9 calls so that may just be the clue that The Fish will soon be exclusive to 103.9fm. I figured the calls that were on 94.3 Jackson would have moved to 103.9 if a 103.9/105.5 simlucast was the final plan. I say 105.5 is actually going to change and 103.9 will stay the Fish alone.

He said AM.

And actually, here is KKLA's coverage vs KRLA. KRLA sends a decent signal all the way into San Diego and Santa Barbara. KKLA does not.

I'd say KRLA is the largest signal.

I stand corrected.

Like I said, I heard that information second hand. It is clear that Salem's business model differs from that of some of the other broadcasting companies.
______________

Salem and Its Signals

You're actually pretty much correct.

While it is not carved in stone, Salem does tend to put its religious talk/teaching formats on its strongest signals. It's their flagship format.

Here in Northeast Ohio, after much swapping among its signals, Salem's religious talk/teaching "The Word" ended up on the 2nd most powerful AM signal in the Cleveland market, WHKW/1220. The sports format they inherited on 1220 is now on Salem's 2nd biggest AM signal (WKNR/850). CCM "The Fish" is on full-market FM WFHM/95.5.

I suspect they are happy with KKLA being a full-market FM signal, and don't much care if KRLA/870 may reach some out of market areas. Besides, Salem already has stations in the San Diego market.
