I think hosts like Ronn Owens, KGO's highest profile local host, would not describe themselves as "liberal". Ditto with Gene Burns or Gil Gross. Taliaferro? Definitely. The former host Bernie Ward? Definitely. Karel, now at KKGN/960? Definitely. But they are/were all post-10 PM or weekend hosts.

I wouldn't call Owens KGO's highest-profile host. Here in L.A, I've heard much more buzz about Taliaferro and former host Ward. It would stand to reason since post-dusk, KGO is heard in 11 western states and covers a potential audience of over 100 million people.

Most people aren't listening to radio at that time of night. I always have to laugh at the 100 million potential that "what's his name" on KGO touts on the weekend. A tiny, barely measurable amount of people listen to KGO outside of their daytime service area. The days of long distance AM listening have been long long gone.

I would guess that a large number of people in the Bay Area have never heard Ray Taliaferro outside of the curathon.

Ronn Owens is probably their highest profile host and if I'm not mistaken, beats Rush Limbuagh in the SF Bay Area market.

I think that's correct, MRK - last time I heard, Ronn Owens beats Rush, who is now on Citadel sister station KSFO. RE: Gene Burns - I no longer listen to talk radio at night either, but from the dozen or so times I've heard Burns in the past couple of years - I'd say he's changed from a Libertarian with a rather morally conservative social view - into a liberal. Maybe you could call him a small L" libertarian, but even that would be a stretch.

Ronn Owens is KGO. Owens averages a bit over three times the AQH persons that late-nights on KGO does.

KGO does not get ratings in LA. Of course, it occasionally gets a credit or two for some quarter hours, but that is more likely from Angelinos traveling into the groundwave coverage area of KGO.

It would stand to reason since post-dusk, KGO is heard in 11 western states and covers a potential audience of over 100 million people.

Radio in general has about a third of the daytime level of listening at night. KGO is no exception.

With luck, KGO gets an occasionally useful signal into Oregon, parts of Washington, and perhaps some of Arizona and Idaho and a tad of Nevada. (although the directional system is great for the Bay Area but not so for coverage anywhere to the east. That's perhaps 6 states, not 11.

The only time I ever heard Ronn Owens mentioned was years ago when he was simulcast on KABC here.

The reason he gets such huge numbers in San Francisco is that he is local and has been in tune with the market for longer than most can remember. KGO has historically been a well programmed and well managed station and has done a fine job in appealing to the somewhat unique aspects of that market.

Oh, if memory serves, Gene Burns is a Libertarian, for crying out loud. Capital L, as in a member of the party.
And that's a problem because.....????

I wish there were more libertarians on the air!!

There's Frangela to fill afternoon drive.; They're the best thing that's a good dose of really funny entertainment, progressive and local and with Randi Rhodes as a lead-in and Mike Malloy following; that's a very strong 10 hours.

Keep it going; we need a liberal talk station in Los Angeles.

Clark Howard is an excellent choice for PM drive. I applaud Robin Bertolucci for that one

Not the first time a financial host appeared on a progressive talk station in a major or medium market. Years ago, the morning host on Madison, Wisconsin's 92.1 The Mic was none other than financial guru - and known right-winger - Dave Ramsey.
