KTOK Layoffs

Just when we thought they were as cheap as they could get, they take it to even another level of low. Before it's overwith they'll have two people in the building, one Manager (janitor) and one employee (saleman). The rest of it will be ran by automation from corporate. This may be an exaggeration at this point, but who knows? Give the little crooks in Texas some time. At the rate they are going, it might happen sooner than later :( .

Clear Channel will not be happy until they totally destroy local radio. They don't encourage talent or innovation. They have stock holders not listeners to please. Firing Jerry Bohnen signals the end of inestigative original reporting. Soon it will be part timers ripping and reading. Eggman is a unique talent who never phoned it in. He came prepared everyday with fresh material. Both deserve better and I hope the get it.

CC is a scary company IMO. Many layoffs over the years have been involved all over the country with them. I don't think I would work at Clear Channel mainly for that reason alone if I wanted to work in radio.

Yup. Because working for CC isn't actually working for radio. It's some poor substitue. Cumeless is actually one step worse, if that's even possible.

I'm curious what the layoff is generally attributed to? I know that Bain Capital is squeezing to pay that dividend. And of course the backlash against EIB has been very much in the news. I also have heard about a shareholder lawsuit over the dividend, and rumblings of an investigation over insider trading. Anyone have any ideas?

When I worked at KTOK, in the mid to late 70s, there were eight full timers in news. I was one of three part timers. Jerry Bohnen is a great journalist and will be missed.

Everyday is a "new adventure" with these big corporate "broadcasters" it seems. At some point I wonder why people even try to stay with them. I know several that have went on to other industries and, other than missing "the good 'ol days", really are happier they did. Radio better watch itself. It's creating it's own grave and about ready to throw itself in it.

“Unfortunately in the process of improving our abilities to serve our stockholders, some employees were slaughtered,” he said. “These are quite easy decisions to make. We don't give a rat's furry a$$ to their commitment to Clear Channel over the years. We are committed to stale, automated, satellite programming.”

Fixed it for ya Bill Hurley.

Sadly I'm quite sure that Bill would have rather left things alone. HE is not committed to stale, boring, and automated programming, his big bosses appearently are. I'd say he's done an excellent job so far trying to keep the insanity down at the OKC level to this point. As with many places, a guy can only keep the bean-counting bastards away from screwing stuff up so long. This week the jerks won. I'm sorry Bill and others that you guys had to endure showing your freinds and co-workers the door. I would have strongly considered putting my keys in the desk and calling the idiots to tell them "you're outta here" about like Mickey Luckoff did at KGO to the Citadel jerks.
