KT'R Bogus Time Checks

In my continuing quest to get the attention of the PDISU
on a flaw in his hourly news wheel...

This morning we heard, over the traffic sounder,
"KTAR news time coming up on 6:29..."

Unfortunately the dime was in Mr. Rococco's pocket...
er...uh...I mean...

Unfortunately that was spoken at 6:27:45 (atomic watch time).

The worst bogus time check I've heard since KT'R went to
"traffic and weather on the nines." Puts the 6:28:05 and
6:28:11 from a few weeks ago to shame.

Hey Russ, you should have figured out by now that you can't do
Deputy Dan and Mr. Ed in 1:00--or even 1:15--especially if you're
up against a hard join (ABC News at the TOH) or even a soft join
(anchors with top stories at the BOH).

Just call it "traffic and weather on the eights" and give us--or at
least those of us without an atomic watch--accurate time checks!

I can't imagine that this "T&WTOT9s" will last much longer. I have been noticing that KT'R has been fudging on the numbers and it is wrong having their bumper talk over TOH ABC News. They need to move it to the 8s.

I believe a news station should have some type of network news affiliation, so I don't have a problem with keeping ABC.

We don't think the Bogus Time Check is a big deal for The Men In Secret Underwear. However, Nurse Jeff and I continue to question top of the hour ABC News when 90% of the time a local story is far more important than network news. If we were TMISU we'd start the hard news at :59 with one minute of local, followed by ABC, then more local. This brilliant strategery takes advantage of that godawful final stopset of the hour at KFYI and their 7 second delay which starts news at 0:00:07. KT'R News...60 seconds sooner! :p

KFYI's stopset just before the top of the hour is awful and a huge tune-out factor, at least for me.

I miss the (now long-gone) days when KFYI would actually take a talk show up to 59 minutes, 50 seconds (or so) before hitting the legal ID and then - BAM! - the news was on. It gave the listeners a reason to listen to the whole show and stick around for the news.

As it is now, if someone tunes out at 56:00 to miss four minutes of commercials and doesn't tune back in for the news, if they return at 6:00 after the hour, KFYI has lost something ratings-wise.

Of course, nothing was worse than the long-ago experiment to do a stopset at 12:00 after the hour. The talk show host would barely have enough time to say hello and set up a topic before having to break for spots. I think Barry Young, who is "time-challenged" when it comes to hitting the soft breaks, pulled a muscle somewhere every time he had to his that 12:00 sucker.

Almost like Jacobs in the morning with the traffic breaks. It's aggravating to tune in hoping to hear a traffic report, only to hear the nearly-incoherent one rambling on about "shamnesty" and the like, when he should be transitioning straight to traffic!

Note to Bruce: When the traffic bed starts playing, intro the traffic and STFU! (Thats shut the $#%& up for those of you in Rio Linda). ;D

Jacobs-holics don't give a rat's ass about traffic. They love him calling Maverick's plan "Shamnesty". Keep in mind, it took Chickboss several years along with Heidi Fogelsong, Jim Sharpe and Bill Heywood to realize the only way to beat KT'R was to do the opposite in AMD. Believe Nurse and me...Bruce is OPPOSITE! We dig him ;D :D ;)

Don't forget (during daytime) the additional :09 IBOC (better: "ICRAP") delay
which results in the newscast starting at 00:16.

Reminds me of "News five minutes sooner on WABC New York! (old ABC sounder)"
from many years ago.

BTW, this morning Ned sort of redeemed himself. Sports--and the obligatory
jock spot following--must have been running late, although I will cut them
some slack as their newswheel must have gone over a few spike strips due
to the U.K. terrorists story.

Over the traffic sounder at 6:20:30 he said (paraphrasing)
"...it's a little after 6:19...actually it's 6:20..."

I hope he didn't get called on the CISU (that's carpet in secret... ;D)
for being accurate!

About three weeks ago Bruce was in one of his musings (i.e. rants) when they hit the (horrible) traffic bed. I turned to KT'R and listened to Deputy Dan's report, turned back, Jacobs still talking, listen to Ed's weather, turned back and Jacobs is still yelling. I will estimate he talked at least 3 minutes while the (horrible) traffic bed played the entire time. Chickboss must have at least a 10 minute bed for emergency situations like these.

Get a life, you're actually raising issue that a time check was off by 80 seconds give or take. That's the biggest issue you can come up with? Pathetic!

The bed is around 3 min long and Jacobs rant keeps people listening. No one cares about traffic or weather. We have only one or two at most ways of getting where we want to go and the weather is right on the money 320 days a year (the rest of the time we actually have weather. Like tonight. No forecast this morning for evening storms.)
Fact is, Jacobs is worth listening to. KTAR is terrible. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Uncle Charlie (that's the FCC to you kids on the Tanim Board) has--in the past--
tendered notices of violation to stations for being chronically off on time checks.

I give you this link on Barry Mishkind's oldradio.com website:

http://oldradio.com/archives/warstories/dk-we.htm

The FCC notice reference is near the beginning, but stick around and read
the whole story. The old timers (includes Hagerty ;)) will enjoy it, those of
you who have no idea what a turntable, a cart machine or a live jock is,
may just want to go back and kill time on the latest "Energy" thread.

FCC oversight or not, accurate time checks on a heritage news/talker
should be a given.

Newsgodaz obviously a Clear Channel employee. Nothing like admiring the chandeliers on the Titanic. Don't mind the water.

As for people not caring about traffic or weather. A joke, rght? Can't be a serious comment. :-\

You're having an issue with traffic reports and time checks being a minute off? Geez.....

Great story.

As for the "old timer" reference....well, hey, it's true...and it beats the alternative! :)
