KT'R TV Ad

......so whattya think of that "red state/blue state" ad KT'R has been running on TV lately? The Nurse and I thought we'd open it up for a little Toaster Talk on the subject instead of offering our $.02 worth. Go ahead...

I don't know if anything can help that station short of putting its tail between its legs and limping back to AM.

I've seen the ad almost as many times as the GEICO lizard. I'm jealous of a radio station that gets to buy advertising.

The ad didn't look like the usual radio garbage that someone made 10 years ago in St Louis and that all the other stations use because it was cheap. I liked it.

Just as Nurse Jeff and I suspected, the KT'R TV ad hasn't made much of an impression on anyone! And within the 30 seconds of video is a glimpse into why the Master Blogger has failed to make a dent in the battle against KFWhyEye: It's about politics, stupid...not the election! You can say "talk the vote" as much as you like, but that doesn't captivate the passion of talk radio listeners. For them it's Red States vs Blue States; hyphenated Americans vs. un-hyphenated Americans; Hillary haters vs. Bush bashers, and the 2000 Presidential election which was bungled by Al Gore and stolen by the Supreme Court. Since his arrival at KT'R, the Master Blogger has wanted to distance his station from the contentiousness of politics. That philopsohy kept Toaster Talk alive and well for another embarassing year. It resulted in numerous on-air promos reminding listeners KT'R was above dog piling. And it resulted in mocking a station that has consistently beat them by doing talk radio better than anyone else, in spite of being on AM! Here's a clue for TMISU....don't talk the vote, walk the politics.

"A little toaster talk" ??

I think you've got more issues with the Master blogger and KTAR than just this new commercial ad. You waited for a couple of comments to appear so you could continue your usual bashing. Come up with something new, this gets boring.

I think the question posed by Dr. Akbar is legitimate, and worthy of a response but not an attack on him. That brings conversation to a standstill. Agree or disagree, but a personal attack isn't necessary.
The KTAR ad was not compelling, and with all the red states, it was confusing.

Russ Hill is a smart guy with some good ideas, but what KTAR desperately needs is some consistency! You can't change the name of the station every three months and expect people to remember it. It's great that KTAR has a ton to spend on research, but I think they need a consultant to tell them they don't need to go with every idea the research gives them. Or perhaps they should mirror 620, and leave the PD under the direction of a consultant who knows what he's doing! A powerless PD can't make a wrong decision! At least in theory.

It would make more sense to use the 2006 (election results) Red & Blue map instead of the very dated 2004 map. I don't think the USA is as 'republican' today as it WAS in 2004. Now, back to radio.

I like the idea of talk on FM. I wish 92.3 SUCCESS. This is a station that will have growing pains and needs nurturing. It's not going to happen overnight.

I can't even begin to tell you what's wrong with that line of thinking:

1) Russ Hill may be a nice man, in fact I'm sure he is and I'd love to have a beer with the guy sometime. Unfortunately, "smart" is not exactly an adjective I would use in describing the Master Blogger. Smart people do not make boneheaded decisions like hiring out-of-town folks to talk local issues and then blast other station's for doing the same thing. "Smart" people don't change station positioners every book., "Smart" people don't put the first hour of Phil Hendrie's show on a 21 hour tape delay simply because they don't have the mental capacity to figure out how to navigate standard vs. daylight saving time. "Smart" people don't support 'toaster talk' where the host does "what do you think of this topic, give me a call" radio. "Smart" people don't tell you how they're committed to news and then cut back on the news content by 50%... anyway, I think you get the idea.

2) You are advocating for a consultant? You understand that consultants are precisely what's put terrestrial radio behind the 8-ball in the first place right? Remember it was a team of these types of people that created the disaster known as FREE-FM. Good God, If you think Russ Hill makes poor decisions, wait until you give him a consultant, KKNT will most assuredly pummel KTAR at that point.

3) You are also advocating to have a PD with no power. The only thing worse than a bad program director is a puppet program director. "Boy, I want you to run more syndicated shows to save us money..." "Yes massah! I'll get to firin' everyone rights away!"

My hope is that you aren't in the business now and won't ever be a decision maker, because we already have enough of this nonsense as it is.

Nah... looks to me like you can do more than just start.

Actually by most accounts he's kind of a dick. But that's neither here nor there. Being smart doesn't necessarily mean you make smart decisions. With Russ Hill it's obviously quite the opposite. In fact your response to my message was to repeat my criticisms and then add a few more, and I agree with your additions.

2) You are advocating for a consultant? You understand that consultants are precisely what's put terrestrial radio behind the 8-ball in the first place right? No, I'm advocating for sarcasm lessons. I'm not advocating consultants... I'm saying a PD who follows every minor suggestion the research firm points out obviously doesn't understand that radio isn't just about research. The research is a tool to help you determine your strengths and weaknesses. You still need some type of clear, concise vision if you are going to follow through. Russ Hill does not have that.

3) You are also advocating to have a PD with no power. The only thing worse than a bad program director is a puppet program director. "Boy, I want you to run more syndicated shows to save us money..." "Yes massah! I'll get to firin' everyone rights away!"
You really suck at noticing sarcasm. Again, that wasn't me advocating powerless PD's... more that I was criticizing 620 for having one. A PD who reports to another PD and a consultant on just about everything. Sounds like an APD job to me.

My hope is that you aren't in the business now and won't ever be a decision maker, because we already have enough of this nonsense as it is.
And that is the reason I am no longer in radio.

Before this topic is moved to Take It Outside, we wish to make the following disclaimer: Neither Dr. Akbar or Nurse Jeff work (or have ever worked) for KT'R. The Esteemed Middle Eastern Men of the Media have never met the Master Blogger or would be able to identify him at a Circle K. The good Dr. and his right hand man appreciate all comments, some more than others, pertaining to this topic. Dealer retains all rebates and batteries not included.

I haven't seen the ads yet, dang.

I will say one thing about Ankarlo and Mac, the endless prattle about immigration is dull.

And laughable, I am an employer, I hire hundreds of people a day, I know all about how insanely written the new law is and how much of a CF labyrinth they have created. I have to live it, every day, I have to explain it to other companies, its nuts.

So, when you hear radio hosts pontificating on something, remember this, they are jocks, not experts in anything that people do in the real world. Their goal is to get ratings and fire you up, much like a carnival barker.

/rant off :)

Legend City,

Just search keyword "KT'R" (don't forget the 'A') on YouTube and you will find it! I'd send you the link, but my current employer blocks YouTube (something about productivity lost when employees do things other than work).

I watched the ad this morning at o'dark thirty when I got up. Neat? Sure. Must be nice to have a big ad budget. Compelling? Not really.

I just watched it!

Underwhelming. Its a "so what?" commercial.

I don't know what is on KTAR, the personalities, or any compelling reason to listen.

All I get out of it is:

We are a talk station

There are varying opinions in america

KTAR is in America.

Trying to view it as if I had never heard of KTAR, and it doesn't do much for me.

Last night, I saw :10 spot for KTAR during "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central.
(A rerun of Monday's show on Tuesday night) Though much shorter, the ad had more impact than the one being aired using red and blue states simply because it got to the point fast. However, the audience of the Daily Show doesn't seem to me like it would be a good target audience for KTAR. But then again, the ad would reach the appropriate demographics.

Could be wrong, but wouldn't viewers of Daily Show lean left??? If so, what's the point of running a TV spot for a conservative talk station??? Or was the :10 for KTAR as a guy talk station?

No. the :10 spot was generic, featuring the U.S. flag and their current identifier "Newstalk 92-3 KTAR". But you're right, in my opinion, about the Daily Show audience.

Another wonder blunder by the Master Blogger! ;D

How many more strikes are TMISU going to give this nitwit !!??

A promotion to another Bonneville station would be the easiest way to remedy over a year of M.B. blunders. If the CCU suits owned KT'R, he'd be toast by now. But of course we wouldn't have seen the most recent TV commercials as CCU doesn't spend the way TMISU do!
