KTRB 860 AM

What's the latest on the building of this new powerhouse AM signal? And what is this crap thats on the new KMPH 840 AM? What a waste of one great radio signal! Somebody please wake up Pappas Broadcasting! Hell Regional Mexican would be better than the trash on the air now! Is there not even "ONE" creative radio person working for the Pappas radio company?

There is still lots of transmiiter site work to be completed. Remember there will be two seperate day and night transmitter sites.

As of August the format for KTRB had not been decided. At this point the format is not as important to the owners as completing construction of the station.

The studios will be co-located with the Pappas TV station on Montgomery in the City.

They describe the format of KMPH - Modesto as a "full-service station"

Pappas is a TV company and this radio station has been in their family for decades. They feel a stong bond with this station (especially since they received the San Francisco permit for only the costs of pursuing it), however they have no interest in owning other radio stations.

Expect the on-air date to still be a few months away.

Anyone have any suggestions for the format of KTRB 860 - San Francisco?

Newsperson: What is your relationship to Pappas? How do have an inside track.
I heard they are considering an all sports format by the bay area.

Yeah, how about hiring some talented adult personalities? How about mixing some music that boomers like, along with topical conversation, maybe some sports, plus news headlines every twenty minutes, and make it a station in the mold of KNBR or KSFO back in the days when you could count on a radio station being a radio station?

No stupid sidekicks laughing like hyenas at anything the main host says. Nobody who sounds like a stupid 16 year old just off the street doing news or traffic. No stupid liners, just classy jingles.

Do something to attract people from about 40 years old and up back to the radio. We grew up on radio, but the corporate station owners believe that radio should be an iPod or a CD jukebox. It isn't. It's radio. We're ready to tune in if it's done right.

(Oh, and tell your advertisers that we have lots of money just waiting to be to be spent!)

I met Harry Pappas and we did some business in the mid 90s up in Reno when he acquired Channel 27 from Chester Smith. Harry used to work out of his corporate office in Visalia and I would also visit there. I still keep in touch with others in the organization and the call letters KMPH for 840 modesto was not their first choice. At first it was somethng like KPNP until they thought it sounded like K-Pimp and it was quickly scrapped.

The full service format with a mix of music standards with talk and news was chosen on purpose to serve Modesto as KMPH 840 does not have the regional coverage they had on 860Khz., so now it has more of a hometown sound.

Pappas does have various consultants working for the company and they will consider their input and others in developing a format that makes programing and economic sense. I do not expect them to accept a quick fix such as all sports, instead expect them to develop a format that makes money! Does that translate into good programing?......only time will tell.

That's the latest from newsperson.

The station was originally KPMP (hence the K-Pimp reference), then switched to KMPH just prior to going on the air.

...And I still believe that the KTRB call letters should remain in Modesto where they belong, and where they have a legacy and history. When 860 goes on the air, 860 should get the KMPH calls and the KTRB letters should return to the city of Water Wealth Contentment Health.

Hire Rothman & Wattenberg. They're pals.

I read in the Chronicle today that Green Mountain Media owner of a women's talk network, they'll have an affiliate in SF in December. Could KTRB be it?

KTRB 860 has been on the air periodically testing the last two days. It doesn't appear to be full power yet. There is an occassional female voiced ID.

I worked at KTRB-860 very briefly in 1994. They were Spanish Talk at the time. I loved Bessie. A very good lady to work for, however I just didn't care for Modesto. I am happy that they are now in San Francisco. Unfortunately what format would succeed at 860? Personally I didn't care for the central valley.

Can't help but wonder what Pappas will do with this signal.. In Modesto we have News/Talk and Adult Standards on KTRB's Sister station, don't think that it's gonna make much of an impact against the two formats it seems to be going after down the AM Dial..

They just filed another amendment to their Construction Permit to use their night site also as their day site. 50 KW day & night same pattern.

Well, I could hear the "Test ID", "KTRB San Franciso Transmitter Testing at Low Power" in westen Stanislaus County. Sounds like that was thrown in from a future ID package. Nice. It would have been much nicer (yea I know, I'm going to hear, "but that was ONLY low power from the Ibiquity campaigners) without the additional +20khz of trash from "The NEW KMPH 840". But I guess you can consider it a new art of DX'ing through 40 kHz of digital trash from one HD/AM (yes technically it's "HASH" there, that could be some "encrypted" marketable information). But besides the escallating demise of the "PUBLIC AIRWAVES", It's good to hear a new project coming together as planned (yea just because I'm KTRB Modesto alumni from the 70's) Yea, I like power line noise more than Digtal Noise = NRSC Mask. Well a mask is a cover, is't it?

FIN !

How many questions are on this test? Dang! They have been testing for such a long time. The longest test I ever took was four hours! I passed. Sure hope KTRB passes. It would be a waste of time to have studied so hard and long, only to fail. Good Luck KTRB and God Speed!

P.S. When in doubt, remember the answer is always 'C'

I noted posts about the KTRB move back in June, but haven't heard what happened since. Seeing the station is still listed as a "Silent Station" on the Commission database, I was curious to know if anyone on this board knew what the status is?

I have heard KTRB testing as recently as a bit over week ago. But it has been silent since, so either the holidays caused some time off for the crew doing the construction and field measurements, or they are finished and now awaiting FCC approval of the minor change application filed at the end of October (BMP-20061027AGM).

Just a question. I've read and heard a lot about the pending launch of KTRB--but have heard nothing that I recall about format plans. Anybody know?
