KTRK ABC 13 to air a 3pm Newscast

I find this interesting in a somewhat different way. I believe this is not so much a "ratings" play, as is a "branding" play. A 3pm newscast doesn't garner a large audience, but it does promote the "brand" as being more important. KABC has shown this with their many years, (decades) of a 4pm, and more recently a 3pm, and this appears to be the same inclination with KTRK. I think it makes sense.

One caveat however is those heavy news watchers will get a lot of repeat stories/video. They don't understand that this newscast is not meant for them. It is meant for a segmented audience that tunes in for short periods. The jury is out on how this all comes out in the overall ratings.

3pm news will fail and cost then to much $$$ with not enough viewers.

It won't fail until after election day in November. If Texas is anything like Arizona, there are tons of political ads to be sold between now and then.

After the elections, all bets are off. The 3pm may be magically deemed "low rated" and canceled.

This is the second ABC O&O to air a Newscast at 3pm after KABC Los Angeles does their 3pm newscast.

The L.A. market is news-intensive. You can tune around the dial at any hour of the day for news because there is at least one station with a newscast for that hour. KCAL is extreme that they are all news during primetime. My relatives were surprised that it was not the same in Houston when they visited me.

Houston doesn't churn enough newsworthy local stories. Why do you think Fox 26 canceled the 6 PM newscast, instead of offering a 1-hour newscast to compete with ABC 13?

The 11 AM newscasts on ABC 13 in particular are rip-n-reads from Google News. The anchors subtly cheer when a breaking news story (like a police chase) comes on to relieve them from reading filler for the rest of the hour.
