Prayers for the families of Dave and John.
Dave was a far better photog than me, needless to say, and he seemed amused by my desire to, for just once, scoop him on a big news scene. I never did. I nicknamed him "Mr. Cool," because I tried, but was never able to impress him with my "I almost got a police chase" story of the morning. We traded many good natured jabs over fashion, and personal life goofs, (mostly mine) but he was always helpful and friendly to me in an environment where not everybody was helpful, or even friendly. He surprised me a while back, stopping over to say hi at one of my remotes, and we shared some stories as we had both sorta "got a haircut and settled down." He had many kind words.
It seems almost redundant to say Dave Garrett was great at his job, and lived and saw more in one week than most of us see in years. I will say he was a friend at the office who made a sometimes tense workplace much easier to work in, and who went beyond his job description to help me professionally and personally. I am glad I was able to help him with a couple of very minor things.
Will someone please let us know of funeral arrangements. Can anyone think fo something we could do for the families? Vikki, is there any word from the helicopter community?
As is done in law enforcement and military associations, I think it will be nice if we media brothers and sisters represent our community to pay tribute to these men. Our recent Radio Reunion showed our size, (I had no idea) and sense of unity. Hopefully, we can find an appropriate way to show our respects. I'm sure the families will be appreciative.
Peace, Mike V. "Skymike"
