KTRK first in HD

Today, they debuted SkyEye HD.

Their helicopter live shots are all available in HD and the image is incredible.. just like their counterparts in LA, NYC, Philadelphia and Chicago.

It will sooner rather than later that KTRK will broadcast their news in HD.

Sky Eye HD was on earlier this week - can't remember if it was Monday @10pm or Tuesday @10pm.

When they debuted the new graphics, I had a feeling it would be a matter of time. I wonder if they're doing 4:3 HD currently (as a test...) - the pictures look great.... ?

Too bad our local affiliates in dallas are too cheap to pull something like this off...If WFAA would've became a ABC O&O in the 80's, we'd have it too... :(

The expense of doing HD news is not worth it yet. Only about 5-10% of homes have HD. (and those numbers are questionable since a bunch of people have HD sets and are too dumb to know they also have to have an HD cable box or receiver of some kind to get an HD picture.)

I think as stations go through their next equipment upgrades, they'd be wise to start adding in HD equipment. That does not mean they'll quickly flip to HD, but they'll be ready a few years down the road to make an easier transition to HD.

If WFAA was too cheap, would they be the only ABC station in 1080i? And why would Belo sell their flagship to ABC?

Things are not as they once were.

WFAA mapped out its HD strategy, planning to go 1080i, in the mid-90s. They were still making a reasonable effort to be, as the CJR once described them, "a TV version of the New York Times." By the summer/fall of 2001, DFW was considered by most to be one of the three best markets in the country to own an ATSC tuner. WFAA was partly responsible for this as the other locals didn't want to risk being caught with their pants down if HD and DTV took off.

Unfortunately, today Belo is all about being cheap. You see it in the Dallas Morning News and you see it every day in the news product of WFAA.

While all this "cheap or not cheap" WFAA Dallas talk may be interesting, what about KTRK? Do we really wanna see Marvin Zindler in HD? (there, that should do it.)
