KTRK news now in HD

Watching the 10pm newscast and noticing that. The image is great but I guess I have to invest in an HD set now because I'm seeing that the picture looks larger than normal. The abc13 HD "bug" on the bottom right is not completely on the screen like before. The 5 day forecast graphic looked larger and didn't fit the screen as before. Little things like that bug me so.... I'll be upgrading soon.

Looks like KHOU's flip to HD this past January finally spurred some upgrade action at KTRK. If KPRC/2 doesn't already have a boatload of HD equipment on order, they need to get busy, else they'll be even further behind in the news wars.

I doubt that their conversion to HD was in response to KHOU. HD is very expensive and their PLANNED timetables for rollout were most likely the reason for rolling out now. Belo (KHOU) has always wanted to stay ahead of the curve on new on-air technology and rushed HD out on all of their stations. That, I'm sure, was their plan. As for HD affecting ratings, I believe it has absolutely no effect now. Maybe in 5 to 8 years having HD versus not having it might affect ratings. So few people have HD sets right now it really makes no difference. KHOU's news numbers have been creeping up on KTRK for the past several years because they have the most journalistic newscast in town. KTRK has dumbed up their newscast over the past few years to keep up with KPRC. Problem with that, KPRC's newscast has been dumbed down to the point of a 100+ market station and their ratings are abismal. All the while, KHOU kept upgrading their newscast with better on-air and off-air talent in the news dept. Results speak for themselves, but none of KHOU's success is due to the fact they are now in HD. I'm sure KPRC and KRIV have HD news broadcasts in their futures, but their budgeting procedures will determine how quick they get it to air. Knowing what I know about both, it will probably be a while. Post-Newsweek (KPRC) is supposedly for sale and an expense item like HD will really impact their net bottom line to the point that GM's don't like. Plus, if they are for sale, there could be a moratorium on large cap expeditures. Newscorp (KRIV) is as tight as they get and they have permitted KRIV to add very expensive weather equipment, a live sat truck and new chopper the past few years. Because of KRIV's very large cap ex items over the last few years I won't be surprised if they don't deliver HD for several more years, but as I pointed out it really won't make a difference in viewership. I believe there is still much knowledge that needs to be dissemenated to the public on HD and digital broadcasting before the publics starts mass conversion. Personally, I have an HD set, but I don't subscribe to DirectTV HD. My set has a terrific picture in HD quality supposedly. I have no knowledge on how to pick up alternate digital signals over the air from the TV stations. I'm pretty tech savy and if I don't know something that is supposed to be that basic, I doubt much of the public knows the difference between regular broadcast, digital and HD. There is a tremendous information and knowledge gap that exists between the broadcasters and the general public. Somebody in broadcasting needs to take the lead in educating the public on the issue.

They might as well display the time in a 24 h format and display the temperature on the bug and the forecast in Celsius and use metric units on other portions of the forecast like the barometric pressure in kPa, rainfall in mm, etc.

Now you're being facetious. But you make an excellent point!
