KTSA Afternoons

The word on the street is that KTSA is looking for a new PM Driver. There's already an ad up on the Texas Assocation of Broadcasters website.

The latest ratings were so miserable... so bad... that nobody is listening. Maybe the audience turned to NPR, because WOAI's afternoons were way down, too (despite the rest of the Clear Channel station being through the roof! The mornings were second, but only to a record-setting KISS.)

A little birdie told me KTSA is trying to bring back a golden oldie, who has been pleading to come back to town, where they once gabbed in the mornings.

KTSA also has an ad for a new news director. They need PLENTY of help there, too.

I noticed that a male/female duo had taken the place of Jeff Koch during yesterday's PM drive, but I didn't catch whether it was a vacation fill-in. I thought it was odd that the station would bring in a pair of replacements for a solo host. Usually Chris Duel or Paul Alexander handle vacation shifts.

Duel is doing his show on ESPN in the afternoons and can't do any fill-in for PM drive on KTSA... although it sure makes BMP look stupid for taking Duel off KTSA and replacing him with a guy who lasted all of 8 months. Also makes you wonder if BMP will put Duel back on KTSA and finally stop pouring money into ESPN, which has yet to garner any ratings since launching in February.

Can anyone blame us for the low ratings? Who was more dull and boring, Ferris Buehler's history teacher or that guy from Houston who sounds like an announcer from some 1950's sci-fi B movie? Not just the no talent, but the lack of coverage of pertinent local issues instead of weird news from the internet or a continuation of the daily discussion from the mindless talking heads on cable. There are so many topics for discussion here in our own town, like the current evolving scandal of that innocent city council crook, one of the worst performing school districts in the state asking voters for alot more $$$, the electric company salivating over jacking up its rates when it really belongs to we citizens and on and on and on. But why bother giving the audience any real topics for discussion that touch their daily lives as well as others? No one is listening, so just shovel more dung into the microphone.

Agreed, they probably should have just left him alone on KTSA. His ratings weren't spectacular, but he knows the local area and can talk about better than most people. On the ESPN station he's okay, but they also have him buried into the evening which is a waste. It's a bad time slot for sports radio.

Jeanne Jakle's column today confirms the search. Jeff Koch has been sent back to the RGV because he "wasn't a good fit." Jeanne asked Landis whether Chris Duel might be considered for the slot, but was told that wouldn't be happening because he's "really in his element" at The Zone.

Cut back on the spotload and endorsements. The average listener won't sit thru endorsements by the host followed by another endorsement from the news anchor.

By the way ,news persons can't have any credibility when they are doing endorsements. Poor KTSA has painted themselves into a corner, ratings are so low they are having to make silly sales decisions just to pay the light bill.

Duel is not the answer. Get some discipline, don't let the sales department run programming and bring up tsl before it's too late.

They are too many people still in the building from the Waterman days.

What happened? The one who we all thought was fired has returned without any explanation about his "absence". I happened to be listening on monday afternoon when 'he' returned, complete with his theme music, as if nothing ever happened. The question is: if he wasn't fired, why didn't the fill-ins play his theme music and announce that they were substituting for the vacationing so and so during his absence? Not one of the subs ever mentioned what was going on or why they were in someone else's timeslot. It was as if JK had never existed. Now he's back and no explanation. I guess since no one is listening, it doesn't matter. Another guess is that BMP had to bring him back for the duration of the sponsor's ad contracts after those 2 NPR-type yuppies were advocating distributing condoms in public schools as the only method of solving our teen pregnancy problem. That subject really seemed to PO lots of people and most likely hastened their exit. Who were they anyway? Maybe more 'talent' with $$$ who apparently bought their way onto the airwaves. Whats next? Who's next? What happened?

I heard Chris Duel use the JK theme music on Friday and he made it clear during the show that he was just filling in for JK.

I'll bet your theory about why JK is back is close to the reality.

Jeanne Jakle's column today says that JK has moved back to McAllen and is doing KTSA's PM Drive remotely from there until the station finds a permanent replacement.

I knew it. I tuned in, just to hear if he'd be back, and the audio quality was HORRIBLE. He might as well have been doing the show over a phone line. What kind of yard-sale equipment is BMP using?

I guess they haven't found a news director either, because the newscasts are still scatter-shot at best.

All kinds of weird stuff going on at BMP right now... After Duel filled in on KTSA (which just goes to show how much BMP cares about ESPN if they're going to pull him off his show to fill in for KTSA and let his crew try to man the helm without him), he and his prodcuer took a couple days off from ESPN... probably coincidental but the timing was weird. KTSA is spinning out of control and someone needs to right the ship ASAP.

And that's not BMP's only problem...I hear a rumor on the street saying they were going to make ESPN strictly "guy-talk" with occasional sports... they obivously haven't made any in-roads into Ticket's ratings, or they wouldn't be making a drastic programming change. If they put up another dash in the ratings, I would assume BMP pulls the plug. At least then they could put Duel back on KTSA full-time where he belongs.

Personally, I thought it was a big mistake for BMP to take Chris Dual off of KTSA radio in the first place.
He is a very talented local talk show host who is best showcased on KTSA then 1250 The ticket.

Speaking of The Ticket, where is their website? It was supposed to be up months ago.

1250 the Zone's lack of a website is another puzzling thing about BMP and their management of that station... It really doesn't take 7 months to get a website up and running. I think BMP was waiting to see if ESPN had any success before they put any more money into website, marketing, etc... which is asinine, because you NEED a website and marketing to let people know you're there.

For a moment, I thought BMP was preparing for an all-out assault on Clear Channel. They were pouring all this money into brand new studios and they were looking to grow the News dept for KTSA, etc., etc. But that was sometime in February when they started this whole push and it's only gone downhill since then.

???

I meant 1250 The Zone. mrob75 knew what I meant. Those sports radio websites sound all the same to me.
Since I'm a fan of Chris Dual and now live in Ohio, I was hoping 1250 The Zone was going to be streamed
so I could continue to hear his show. The last I heard from BMP, that website was supposed to be up
and running by the end of July. The site was originally planned to be up and running by June of this year.
So, why bother asking again? Something is wrong if their website is not up and running yet.
