It definitely dropped standards, "San Antonio's Classic Songs," in '91. I'm thinking you're about right as to when it started, too. It went from top-40 to AC to standards to talk if I remember correctly.
I remember listening to Simply Red Holding Back the Years and Sade Smooth Operator on AM 550 KTSA on an old Sony AM clock radio back in July of 1986. By 1986 they flipped to Adult Contemporary then Standards than News/Talk/Sports. It seemed like KTSA was in a very crowded format war at the time, I mean you had KLLS 100.3; KQXT 101.9; KSMG 105.3; and KESI 106.3 (then KMMX 106.7)
Now if only KONO AM and KAHL AM would broadcast again in AM Stereo.
