KTSA's Ricci Ware Having Surgery to Restore His Hearing

I know there are a lot of people from outside the market who read this board, so I thought it was worth mentioning that KTSA's Ricci Ware is having cochlear-implant surgery this week to restore his hearing. Ricci is a veteran air personality of over 50 years in San Antonio. Paul Alexander, who is filling in for Ricci during his recovery, said on the air that Ricci will be out next week and back on the air the week of May 14. Alexander also said that Ricci's hearing loss made it very challenging for him to do his job the last couple of years and his efforts at handling the regular talk-radio gig were nothing short of heroic.

Is this the same procedure Limbaugh had? If so, it seems to be working fine for him. Good luck Ricci.

Yes, in fact Ricci's son Trey contacted Rush and asked him if he might speak with Ricci about his experience with the procedure. A few days after Trey made the request, Ricci got a call at home from Rush and they talked for about an hour. This was detailed in Jeanne Jakle's column a few weeks ago and I've heard Trey mention it on the air.

The following is from the WAKY tribute site http://www.79waky.com:

Ricci Ware Interview
MP3 Format - 17:14 - 6062 KB

While the first voice heard on WAKY belonged to station owner and radio legend Gordon McLendon, the first DJ on that historic day was Ricci Ware. In this May 22, 2007 interview, Ricci describes how WAKY took Louisville by storm from practically the first record. (Was it really "Purple People Eater"? Did anybody find the million dollar WAKY check? Did that make-believe swimming pool have lifeguards?) You'll also hear how Ricci came to work for "The Old Scotchman" and what sent him back to Texas to go to work for his next station -- KTSA in San Antonio -- where he's remained for nearly five decades.

I heard Ricci say on the air yesterday that once BMP took over KTSA, they approached him about whether he might like to retire once his career reached the 50-year mark. (A milestone he reached at the end of last month.) He told BMP he would prefer to continue working and signed a 5-year contract shortly thereafter.

Good for Ricci. Boy, for a company that said there would be limited changes, when they acquired KTSA and whatever the calls are on 102.7 now, they sure have tried to make some big changes.
