KTU MD Skyy To Program BPM

According to All Access, the ex-Party 105 PD is jumping over to program XM 81. As someone who enjoyed the old sound of Party, I'm expecting big things from this. Don't know what this means for Alan Freed, but it would be nice if he stayed at the channel in some capacity as well.

I wish Skyy the best. And you are right about Alan Freed. The man KNOWS dance music and my hope is that he does stay and if he decides to go, get something that can only increase his name recognition and showcase his talent further :)

I wish sky the best having met him on a few occassions but if his work at KTU is any indication of whats to come then Siruis has nothing to fear at from him joining XM.

Skyy is the music director at KTU he doesnt have final say on what gets played and what doesnt. He will do a good job there.

People are so Nieve on this board

I wonder if hes going to tighten up the playlist and make it more like The Beat with a New York Dance Feel? I'm just saying this is where it could be headed...

The job description of "Music Director" is different at each station. At some stations (very few) they have a great deal of leeway in putting in a majority of the music. At some stations they are only able to make suggestions. At the majority of radio stations, their jobs fall somewhere in between the two.

As for Skyy and the new job, he is an excellent choice and he'll do a great job at XM. Just like he did at KTU, Party and the stations he jocked at before entering the programming arena.

Not sure how much power Skyy had at KTU, he was PD at Party 105 prior to going to KTU & the station sounded great under him there
______________

What a coincidence…on the same night this thread started, I found my old "Beat Radio" T-shirt after many years :) (Alan Freed was the creator of Beat Radio).

I got that shirt when Beat Radio was being carried on numerous AM stations across the U.S. back in 1998, including KIDR 740 here in Phoenix. If I remember correctly, the old Childrens' Radio AAHS network went off the air and Beat Radio was heard on those AM's for a few months until the stations were sold.

Re: BPM

Hopefully they will keep playing dance hits from around the globe as opposed to the extremely limited Sirius approach that mainly plays only titles released in the US with a huge amount of pop remixes.
Edited by saladdressing on 10/19/05 07:52 PM.

Yeah, I wish Sirius THE BEAT would play more dance songs from Europe, like BPM Does, But the Imaging, and presentation on THE BEAT is so much MORE Realistic, and radio sounding.

when given the choice between great music and "sounding like a terrestrial radio station", I'll take great music hands down.

Enjoy your jukebox.

Granted, it is pretty much a jukebox, but even as huge of a Sirius fan as I am: I will have to admit that "BPM" is much better musically. I hope hiring Skyy as PD will give them more of an on air presence (I hope he does an on air shift), but I hope he doesn't change the musical direction of "BPM".
I am a huge supporter of Sirius and spend 80 percent of my time there, but "BPM", along with the decade channels, are the main reasons I also subscribe to XM, and I do love "BPM" musically.

Jukeboxes don't have Alan Freed giving out dance music news, nor do they have a top 34 countdown each week, with a spotlight on up-and-coming dance hits.

Just because BPM doesn't have a typical wacky radio personality doesn't make them a jukebox. At least when Freed speaks, it's always about something relevant to dance music.

Notice to my fellow R-I posters: a response to this discussion was deleted. The response, while strong, was on-topic.

Just thought you should know that there is some interference occurring.

They've been repeating alot of songs on BPM these days. Less new music.Less new imports. More Backspins.

There are songs on The Beat that BPM doesn't actually play. And if you look at the 33 1/3 countdown, The Beat is playing more and more of the same songs (different remixes).
