KTU Picking Up Where Jack-FM Left Off...

I'll give it a listen!

I'm surprised more of the NYers who scream for old NY/Easy Coast radio don't have Sirius. It has all of the great NY DJs from Brooklyn's Joe Cosi to Carol Miller to Pat St John, Meg Griffin, Michael Tearson, and Vin Scelsa. Its a smorgasbord of great DJ names. And it has dedicated narrow cast channels with great DJs too of 70's (key DJ being Gregg Brady from the Brady Bunch although not a NY old school DJ and Magic Matt Allan), 80s with all of the original MTV VJs as DJs and an assortment of other narrowcasted radio. Even an WLIR type channel featuring such NY classic names as Larry the Duck. It's sad that terrestrial radio can't narrow cast but can only have weekends of specials. Yes they are trying to introduce HD radio as they call it, but I have to ask who are they putting in charge of the roll out as the marketing is terrible, let alone one of the stations seem interested in actually offering it. I guess when all you are concerned with is revenue, you can't look beyond how much you are immediately bringing in. Part of the reason for the further decline of free radio.

I found an interesting poll today. It was on a Sirius channel called Sirius Disorder. It's freeform like never heard that plays an assortment of music from middle eastern to B sides of rock and everything in between. Actually at times a very interesting play list. The question of the day was what era of music was the best. All day listeners responded and the DJ read the emails which explained why each era was the best. And throughout the day there were vote after vote with great arguments for 60,s 70s, and 80s. Funny, I listened for about 5 hours and not once did anyone vote for the 50's although the DJ seemed to keep asking why not and offered his take on why the 50's might be his choice. Now I see why oldies isn't 50's anymore and hasn't been for a while. Most folks hate it. Except for NYers who seem to have a much stronger affection for 50's. Sirius of course has a 50's channel with names such as Cousin Bruce and Norm N Nite.

But back to my original thought. I can also see why a weekend of one eras music is often easier than a dedicated channel of it. With one weekend you get a taste and want more. With having it all the time you can have it one for too long and get sick of it. Luckily for me I can float between dedicated 60's 70's and 80s channels one different days when I get sick of one era.
