KTU the new home for indie rock???

Given that most indie-rock seems to be about playing new-wavy/funk-punk/disco house dance music, with bands from across the pond from Franz Ferdinand and Artic monkey to [EDIT], Neon Plastix, fear of flying, Alcazar, as well as NYC artists like Cazwell, xxxchange, Neon Vomit, Phili artists Downtown harvest, Pony Panys.

Some bands are more ready than others for american airplay, but given how easily No Doubt crossed over to dance, perhaps there is a future for rock and roll artist in the dance format.

This band is the real deal:

Ummmmm. No. They are making a format adjustment and nothing more at this time from what I can hear. More Gold, Less (almost no) Currents.

They are just doing pretty much what they did when they signed on 10 years ago and shot to #1. Although I don't believe that shooting to #1 overall is the goal here.

Tell me: With this shift to a format with very few currents, what is the difference between WKTU and WNEW? Aren't they essentially the same station now? The currents were the one thing that made KTU unique.

Just a guess here and something that Allan Sniffen (NY Radio Message Board) talks about in his podcast this week, but there is a bigger picture to be considered. Stations are not seperate entities in this day and age. They are part of a chain. This seems (to my untrained eyes) to be a chess match where they are trying to protect the queen (WLTW) from a format that they think might be able to take them down a few ratings points and out of some billing. Could that format be the "Movin" format? Quite possibly.

Maybe, another chain thinking of coming into NY with this type of format might think twice if there are already 2 NY stations playing a majority of the same records that they would be playing in the Movin format. NY is a rhythmic town (Hear that Jack-FM?) but it doesn't need 3 stations playing Rhythmic oldies. It doesn't even need two. But with WNEW already doing this sound, maybe they start to play a few of the poppier dance currents and draw some of the old KTU audience putting any thoughts of flipping to Movin out of their heads (If that thought was ever in their heads to begin with). KTU still pulls in enough audience to remain a big biller with music aimed at the very specific female target demo. All of those people that migrated to WNEW for classics have already done it so KTU probably won't see a big erosion there. The current based KTU listener really has no where else to go on the dial so they either stay at KTU or cross the street, that part of the audience probably isn't sizable enough to make CC reconsider. Again, I know nothing and am just thinking out loud.

That would be any other station thinking of doing the Movin' format in NY.

The only thing is, if anything, KTU's music overlaps that much more with Lite FM's now than it did before when there were more currents on the playlist. I guess Lite FM's lead is comfortable enough that they are willing to perhaps cannibalize some of their own audience to pre-empt someone else coming in with a Movin' format, even though I have my doubts as to how well such a format would do, seeing the ratings that Mix has been getting.

I feel that in this chess match, Lite FM still remains vulnerable and perhaps if someone went after them directly instead of with a Movin' format, then we might begin to see a real chain reaction as a result.

dude who cares about the rating...have you gotten a pizza, a vaccuum, some golf clubs, anything froma mom and pop place anywhere in staten island, nassau or western suffolk county. they all want to listen to mix. Queens is the last KTu stronghold.

Well ratings wise, if Mix is everywhere but Queens, then the ratings aren't showing it! KTU is still winning that battle. I still hear Currents on KTU, not a lot, but in a day with very few bankable dance hits, its not surprising! With the new "Movin" format now picking up cities across the country I don't see KTU going anywhere, that format is basically KTU in a box... ready to go... while Clear Channel is doing a "Feel The Energy" format of their own that is also very similar.

The real question here, why is KTU and NEW battling each other in the middle of the ratings ladder when they should be going after LTE up on top? It doesn't make sense... or does it? If Clear Channel purposely is throwing a bone with KTU to NEW by trying to draw in a competition between the two it distracts from the real threat which is LTE. I love conspiracy and this is ripe for it! :) Poor KTU is being thrown to the dogs then. Let's hope there is a hero in this debacle which is today's radio and maybe that hero can clarity back to a great radio market. I kind of like the underdogs so I'm hoping WNEW keeps it's slow ascent going and does some damage to the rest.

MIX is basically where they were when they signed on... they have just been bouncing around from 2.0 to 1.7 and back... I don't see much movement there, while KTU has been constant, so any MIX movement isn't happening at the expense of KTU. I'm guessing the heavy daypart and the lessening of currents helps KTU's sister station Z100, not MIX.

True, as a whole NEW hasn't moved up much but it has had it's Alamo time with KTU and is still standing. By all means though KTU should have done a one-two punch to MIX but it didn't. Then big changes came to KTU (I'm still stymied by the Whoopie thing) and continue to come so what does that tell you over at KTU? That's right, what the boards are all talking about a format flip. But you can't really flip big when Whoopie has a three year contract so it's a baby flip into a simple format name change. Just a poor game plan it seems- Building the house on sand and just waiting for the first tide to come in. As for MIX, well there are parts of that station that are creeping up. Important parts. A little tweaking in the other parts make it a lean mean fighting machine. I do hear changes in MIX's format which oddly is exactly opposite of KTU. One is sinking into the marsh of 'oldies' dance and the other is perking up into a MIX of currents and classic dance. Can you guess which is which? I guess I already gave it away.
