KTU's current playlist on their site

The highest played song is only getting 32 spins a week. Most of the other songs on their "playlist" you hardly hear anymore and are merely place holders. They cant even list 30 current songs that they play often.

Very sad... This little battle of which station that can pull out a song to achieve the "oh s#it, i havent heard that in a while" effect is killing us. Mix is great because they claim to be a classic station and they do it very well. They got KTU chasing them around like a cat and mouse game. Cmon KTU, stop depriving us!

KTU is still running the "no repeat workday" programming which limits what they play during the day. They still go more current in the evenings. Rumor has it that KTU may launch a pure-dance channel on HD2 in the near future, but that's merely a token gesture until HD multi-cast receivers start making their way into listener's hands.

If Emmis Hot 97 didnt it that would be my dreams coming true. If not a pure dance clear channel station might not be bad.

I WANT Emmis to do the pure dance BAD! At least they would respect the sound and they'd still get the revenue. And yes, a Clear Channel station might not be bad...but it must say something deep down when three of us (and perhaps more) would want the HD-2 pure dance station on 97.1 versus 103.5

But it's all about perceptions. I would want CC to do it b/c they're the company (NOT Emmis) who actually had the balls to bring the format to the city. They would do a more respectful job of filling the hole for pure dance fans than a company that bowed (rightfully so) to hip-hop several years ago.

Don't hold your breath. Jeff Smulyan recently talked about possible formats. He brought up Classic Hip Hop for Hot. Knowing that company, it does seem like the obvious choice since they hate dance.

Correction-- It was Evergreen Media who brought KTU back in 1996, not Clear Channel. There was a great presentation for the proposal to bring back KTU to NYC. They had pie charts outlining that there was a major hole for dance/CHR, because Z100 was a pop/alternative rock CHR while Hot97 was leaning much more as a hip-hop/rhythmic CHR. When KTU emerged in NYC, it was number one 12+ for several years until slipping back down to its current standing.

Anyway, Evergreen Media merged with Chancellor Communications to become Chancellor Media Group in 1997. Chancellor was then renamed AMFM Radio by 1998. AMFM Radio was bought by Clear Channel in 1999.

In reality, any company can do a decent job in pure dance as long as they bring in the right programming team and give them the right resources to execute it. For an HD2 signal, Emmis still could be a good contender to bring a classic dance format with more freestyle and house a la the old HOT97 in its 80s heyday. It would an opportunity to target a different 25-34 female demo who remember going to the Paladium or other clubs back in the day. In any case, whether it was Clear Channel, Emmis, or CBS Radio, and whether it was a current or classic dance format, they would just need to bring in a programmer who truly knows the format and knows the city's heritage cuts.

I just hope that they would stream it when it happens!

Merry Christmas and keep dancin' in the new year!

Peace Love + Dance Beats

That's actually no rumor, it's a given. With HD, all markets will have pure dance stations on HD2. Once again KTU will be doing nothing special.

Yeah, but isn't that what 'KTU and Mix 102.7 are currently doing now? Classic dance? We don't need a third station like this.

Granted, I agree with what you say about any company doing the dance music format, with the right team. But IMHO, if HD-2 is going to work, radio will have to think somewhat non-conventional to get people to tune in. That's what 92 WKTU did with disco back in the 70's; it managed to get people to migrate over to the FM dial and helped start the death knell of music on the AM. If a KTU-2 or Hot 97-2 did a current dance format, people such as myself would tune in (of course provided that HD-2 units go down in price).

I'd rather see that current leaning station happens since the two classic dance stations in NYC are already here.

Ah, I'd probably stop short of saying all markets. I can see it easily happening in the top 25, perhaps you could stretch that to the top 50 largest markets, but even that's pushing it, in my opinion. That would wholly depend on how much dance music is able to grow (or recover) over the next couple of years. At this point in time, HD2 programming is mostly limited to shoving a bunch of songs into an automated jukebox. Where it'll get interesting is down the road, when there's enough receivers in the audience to make HD2 competitive, and then there will actually be a need for someone who can program it effectively. I use the word "interesting" because some of us saw what happened a few years ago when some of the already few dance stations around failed, and some of those failures were directly attributable to lack of skilled programming. Sure, we'll finally see dance again when HD2 takes off, but will it evolve into anything good? Or will everyone just have more to bitch about?

I can count the number of people in this entire country that have multicast capable radios in their cars on one hand. If IBOC ever catches on and if multicasting ever catches on, the SECOND it does, corporate will turn off any dance station and put something more profitable on the air. 24/7 news and weather comes to mind.<P ID="signature">______________
