KTUX, TUX-99

> Anyone around that has any memories of TUX-99 ?

Driving back from Shreveport to Nacagdoches and hearing Metallica late at Night (weelll- early in the AM- we were at Cowboys) What a big difference from Nac-Lufkin radio when all there happened to be was country, adult top 40 (no rap) and a very lite station. Also, we had an antenna at the top of the Boyden Building in Nac at KSAU, and we could get the TUX in at times.
Weren't they the ones that stunted "white Wedding" on a format flip? Or was it some other Billy Idol song?

Also- in another thread later on- there have been a heckuva lot of people that got their start from the Lufkin and Nac radio markets in the last 20 years that have gone on to full-time radio gigs in bigger markets, and have done well for themselves. Even with all the consolidation!

Damn! You stole my thunder... hehehe! I grew up listening to Tux 99.... Bobby Cook, Shotgun Ken Shepherd (who is the father of Kenny Wayne Shepherd), Real John Steel (who is now an Engineer for Infinity Radio down here in Houston), the Moon Dog, who was my favorite, Terri Weber... yeah I have a lot of fond memories of Tux 99. They were a great CHR station at the time.
______________

Fun Radio...TUX 99...KTUX Carthage - Shreveport - Boooooosier City!

Those days the Legal ID was still a big part of the programming hour.
Today, most stations bury 'em.

...or "Fun Radio...Tux 99...KTUX Carthage - Longview - Marshall"

Recall the legal ID alternated each hour between Carthage/S'port/BC and Carthage/Longview/Marshall until the mid-90s. Once they became "99X, the Rebel Rocker" they dropped the Longview/Marshall IDs.

Tux-99 were always a hit and miss station back then, cheap digital "bathroom" reverb, music off carts with phasing problems, and bad over-processing that squashed everything into a midrangy blur.

Depending on the jock the station could sound great or really really bad. Despite that, Tux-99 was the last CHR station I heard that had that feel of "high energy" AM Top 40 radio.

Besides Ken Sheppard, it always seemed Tux-99 had a lot of DJ turnover. By the early 90's Sheppard was adding a lot of AOR hits into the playlist. It was about the only CHR I can remember that would play Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Actually, it was "Rebel Yell". I should know; I board-oped a couple of shifts during this time and had to play that damn song over and over and over again!

They also played a lot of R&B, especially Moon Dog. I remember hearing "Do Me, Baby" by Me'Lisa Morgan and "As We Lay" by Shirley Murdock. I guess that's why i liked him best.

I think they dropped "Longview/Marshall" from the Legal ID, because the markets changed during that time. I could be wrong, but I think that is why.

I think 99X sounds worse now. The VT'ing is horrible. It sounds spliced up. Last time I was up, I heard them clipping songs and spots. The sound quality was fine, but the presentation was lacking.
______________

Tux-99 never did much promoting in East Texas even back then, a few club remotes from what I remember.

Typical Cheap Channel radio, they are sending thier new music via Mp3 (or some kind of compression) and I can hear some bad phasing on the high end. They should dump Bob and Tom.

At least KTUX's still rocking and hasnt been canned like KLOL and 97.1 Eagle. It fills CC's need for a male 24-34+ oriented station in S'port. I cant see it being dumped for a Sunny, Mega or Jack yet.

How exactly are you listening to the station in Houston and when was the last time you listened? Are you a truck driver?
What can 99X do better, programming, on-air and imaging?
What do you actually like about the station?

February was the last time I was back up in the Ark-La-Tex. And, no I'm not a truck driver. And, no I'm not listening in Houston (I don't even know if you stream on line or not). I've been in Radio and TV over 20 years now. I do like the music and imaging. I didn't mean to make it sound like the music and imaging were bad. Obviously, you work there and were taken back by my comments. I don't know what your set up is, but I heard a lot of clipped spots, clipped announcers, dead air... and this was in the midday. I don't know if you had a board op that was having a hard time or if it's done by Automation/Computer, but it was rough that day. As I said, the music and imaging is fine, but if you must rely on voicetracking (and I realize some programmers hands are tied, it is dictated by corporate or your superiors), at least make it smooth. Hell, I may have just caught the station on a bad day. I didn't mean to make it sound like the station was total garbage, because it is not.
______________

How about the Chicken Man Documentaries?

Tux T's?

Did anyone do a better job with parody songs?

Where is Shotgun Ken now a days?

In 1987 Tux had CUME from Lufkin Texas to the West to Ruston,LA to the East... A "S'port" CHR was #1 in nearly every county in East Texas and every Parish in NW LA.

Whatever happened to Moondog?

Looking back, I always wondered if Moondog was live in town or syndicated. I was a teenager "back in the day" of Tux's dominance and remember Bobby Cook's morning show was almost like hearing from God... What Bobby said was "THE GOSPEL."

Moondog was live in the studio. He used to do quite a few remotes. There wasn't much in the way of syndication like that back then (the good ol'days, when just about everything was live and local). I don't know what happened to him. He was very good, so he probably moved on to a larger market. I still have one of their parody songs somewhere. I was to the Chicago Bears Super Bowl Shuffle song, about the NFL strike. LOL funny! I have to find that.

Last I hear Moondog was still in Shreveport, and was on the school board I think it was, Bobby Cook is doing mornings on KTAL after being with clear channel for a while, Art Simon that did mid days for a while is back home in California, Rick Shelton is now doing enginering in Vegas, Terri Weber is working for some leal estate place in the Dallas area, and doing week ends at some station there, I do not remember the call letters. Machine Gun Dave O'neal
I have lost track of, Ralph Mitchell is working for clear channel and is on KWKH and one other clear chanel station. Ken Sheppard is managing his son as far as I know. I am in Houston working for the University of Houston radio, and doing imageing and consulting for a few stations.
Those were some great times working there.

John, I knew you were down here in Houston with me, but I thought you were at Infinity KILT/KIKK/KHJZ. Were you at one time? I could have sworn someone mentioned that, or I read it someplace. Great to have you on the boards. I hate to say "I grew up listening to you, because I think the same thing, when people have said that to me before... "Thanks for making me feel so old." But, I did, and it was a station that was well ahead of its time. And, for a small market, it did a lot of big market things. The music, imaging, and promotions were TOP NOTCH! A station today would do very well to go back and listen to some of the old airchecks from back then. Last I heard, Terri Weber was at KVIL, but I don't think she is there anymore.
______________

Hi there,
Thanks so very much for your kind words about TUX, it was really a lot of fun putting all of that station together.
Yes I was with Infinity for a couple of years before I come over where I am now, before Infinity I had been with KLDE when they were on 94.5 doing on air work.
E-mail me.

I used to listen to Tux from here in OKC quite a bit back in the 80s. (basically the end of my consistant receiving extention cord for FM DX) I always thought they sounded good programming-wise, but remember their audio was low and didn't sound too good. It's interesting appearently someone recently found their audio to be less than pleasant. Other than bad audio, I remember them as a really good screamin rocker that was pretty top-notch for it's day. I'm glad to see that CC hasn't seen to killing them off like the Eagle and KLOL.
______________
