KTVK: "First Look at 4:30" segment is a glorified tease

Because there was nothing else to watch, I watched channel 15 at 4 and am now going for the 4:30 news on channel 3.

The lead of the newscast is a "First Look at 4:30" segment from Carey Peña. All it was: headlines and "we'll have the full story tonight at 5". It was a two-minute long tease for their 5pm! The only males so far (after the first segment) have been one or two local reporters.

Both stations also did brief segments in remembrance of the helicopter crash. Channel 3's segment had an old picture of their chopper (so old it had the old-style NEWSCHANNEL print on it, curvy S included) that I'd bet dates from the early 90s even to the late 80s (KTVK's heyday, too).

15 at 4 had nearly a whole block of "Internet-weird" category stories, then the weather report. Weather segments were comparable but the extended forecasts were different - 3 had sunny and 97 while 15 had temperatures in the 100s and a chance of rain for Saturday.

The last block on 15 was health news and one last check of the top stories. On 3, a different set of health stories was at the last block, then a last tease for their 5pm news.

3 had some stories not seen on 15: flood warnings in northern AZ, the shelter closure in Flagstaff, a flying object at the space station, food inspections at stadiums, Joe Biden's visit to the Grand Canyon, Ecuadorian visa issues, West Nile Virus,

15 had a story on a woman with a transplant playing in the Transplant Games.

Next in my local news tour, 12 News at 5:

*The lead was the search for the missing kid near Flagstaff. 12 investigated her criminal record and found a "false report to police" on a domestic violence call, a prescription drug violation, traffic violations, and disorderly conduct.

*A story about immigration raids they said was "near Florence" was closer to Casa Grande than Florence.

*Their first weather segment featured a Monsoon Meter, which is kinda cool.

*New stories for me in the first segment at 12 were one about Arizona becoming a finalist for education grants and assistance to Native American reservations. In the second segment, a story about stalking; their health story block; then weather. 12's weather icons look horrible. Their forecast sided more with 3 than with 15 on Saturday's high.

*Sports for two minutes, then the last segment before tossing to the network: another radar view and forecast, then the close to the newscast. I had a headache from watching the news, so I skipped CBS 5.

What about 10? You would have loved all the whirling and swirling graphics,
and the whooshing SFX! ;D

Not to mention the harsh and echoey studio audio.

One point about Valley weather: During the Monsoon season, the forecasting models usually take the temperature WAYYY down in the extended forecast timeframe. At some point today, weather.com was forecasting 88 for Saturday (which is very unlikely unless it rains and/or is heavy overcast from 8am to 10pm). Therefore, the meteorologists have to bring up the temperatures to more realistic levels.
