KTVT/KTXA APPLY FOR SITE CHANGE

The situation with CBS O&O stations KTVT/11 and KTXA/21 has taken an interesting turn. Recall that when all is said and done, the duo of KTVT will be on RF-19 and KTXA on RF-29.

Today, both facilities have filed to increase the tower height and change the transmitter site from the longtime facility on Highway 67 (near Cedar Hill High School) to Richland Tower's location near the Dallas-Ellis County line out on Tar Road.

This exhibit (for KTXA) is the one of most interest:

I saw that today. It looks like the move would give them better coverage of Athens, Mexia, and north Waco (but Gainesville will lose out).

What will become of the longtime channel 11 site on Highway 67 when the move is made out to Tar Road? That current site, just south of Cedar Hill High School could be prime real estate for development.

Isn't KERA/13 still on that tower too? It would be nice/valuable frontage otherwise, with the way things have grown along US 67.

Finally - a date!

KTXA has just filed another STA application with the FCC:

In order to remove the old Channel 18 antenna system from the tower and install the new Channel 29 antenna system, while maintaining service to the station’s audience, KTXA needs to use a temporary antenna system. This antenna system will operate on the same tower as the former Channel 18 and future Channel 29 antenna systems at an elevation of 440.8 meters HAAT, with an ERP of 255 kW Max-DA. It is expected that KTXA will operate with this temporary antenna until on or about January 14, 2011, at which time KTXA will complete construction of its permitted facility and initiate operations on Channel 29.

So now we know about when the channel switch will happen, although I expect it will be somewhat later than the 14th. (For one thing, there is an error about the temporary antenna's HAAT in their application, so they will probably have to refile, which will take a few days.)

Unfortunately for KTXA DXers, the temporary antenna is rather lower than the current one, and will accordingly provide less coverage for the week or two it will be in use.

Just wondering, what's gonna happen to KPFW? Are they moving back up the spectrum to 18?

It looks like the projected date of Friday 14 JAN 2011 for the KTXA change might happen on time:

http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2011/01/04/txa-21-improving-signal-strength/

TXA 21 is about to beef up its over-the-air signal for viewers who watch with antennas.

The improvements will mean a stronger signal that covers more area. Crews have been working on the TXA 21 tower for several weeks in preparation for the switch, which will happen on Friday, January 14, 2011.
According to the updated article, the date has been pushed back indefinitely.

Was just now listening to KRLD and heard an announcement about KTXA with One Million Watts and to rescan at Noon Monday the 17th. Said right at at the end to check the website for further information.

That ad should have been pulled. KTXA's switch has been delayed indefinitely due to the weather.

Over at AVS Forum, Bob Nelson noted that KTXA is now broadcasting on both RF 18 and RF 29. RF 18 is supposed to be switched off tomorrow, at which point KPFW can have it (if they're ready).

KTXA's switch is done. As far as I can tell, RF 18 is now vacant. If you haven't rescanned, do so now.

It was -- shall we say -- a rather "soft launch" of the new facility. :)

Without ceremony or fanfare, KTXA's RF-18 facility went POOF about 5 seconds into the noon telecast of "My Wife and Kids". And the story about the change was buried until around 7:20 PM in the TXA/21 nightly news.

I talked with one of the phone bank people who told me that KPFW will be back on sometime on SAT 22 JAN 2011. But he didn't know the time. The one positive I noted was that it took a quite few tries to get through at 877-TEXAS11 (due to busy signals) and there were plenty of phones ringing when I talked with the staffer. That may indicate a healthy amount of OTA viewers...

...or maybe just a lot of complaints from Tivo and WMC users as well as those with tuners who don't grok that RF-29 is virtual 21 and not KMPX.:

KPFW isn't on yet (but to be fair, the day's not over....)
