And on a related topic.....anyone on the board who had lived through the transition of KTVU from a great indie to a Fox affiliate care to comment on the before and after?
I used to watch KTVU every day after high school in the early 60's and thought it was one of the best stations I have ever seen. But I didn't live in the BA long enough to watch the Fox transition.

I left the BA in '68 but returned on and off during the 80's (mostly in the San Jose area) for work. I remember KICU, I think, as the station that aired the Sharks hockey games (at least for awhile). But in the 60's I lived in Marin and would not have been able to receive 36 (assuming it didn't have translators in the north end of the BA).
I'm still trying to find who played the character of "Mr. Bob" on KTVU in '61-'62. He hosted an afternoon Three Stooges program and was quite a comic. As I remember, he did the whole hour without any sidekicks.

'Tuna - KTVU's news has continued to be held in the highest regard by viewers and critics. That never changed with the Fox transition. That enthusiasm may have waned somewhat following Dennis Richmond's retirement a couple of years ago - their new main anchor, Frank Somerville, does not have Richmond's gravitas. But their reputation remains.

There is a couple good websites about the late Bob Wilkins. one at http://www.bobwilkins.net and http://bobwilkinsthemanbehindthecigar.blogspot.comLkeller said:landtuna said:Lkeller said:The station's owners (Cox, if I remember correctly), purchased KICU in San Jose a few years ago (you might remember "The Perfect 36") if you were around in the 70s). I think The Perfect 36 branding was already happening when I arrived in the BA in '73. Their on camera spokesperson was legendary San Francisco stripper Carol Doda, so the "perfect 36" was supposed to be a clever reference to her chest measurement...the only problem being that those measurements were likely 'enhanced' by silicone, and were more like a perfect 42.
Regardless, the duopoly ownership with KTVU has classed-up KICU considerably. 36 occasionally runs Fox prime time programming when KTVU has a local sports special.
Can't help you on "Mr. Bob," except to note that KTVU had two 'Bobs' that I can remember - veteran reporter Bob Shaw, and Creature Features host Bob Wilkins, who was a dead pan little guy who smoked a huge cigar. Though he wasn't a Halloween-costumed host like...say...Elvira, he did come off as a bit odd.
The best clip of Wilkins is actually from KCRA Sacramento in '67 before he moved down to KTVU - with legendary KCRA personality Harry Martin. I believe Bob used the same musical theme on KTVU.

I'm not sure exactly what "tabloidized" means...

Could that have been Bob March, who was Captain Satellite later in the '60s? I believe that after his on-air career he spent some time as an executive at KTVU.

I've looked through KTVU's website but cannot view the video's for some reason. The photos of early personalities don't look like the face I remember but that could be me. Thanks for the memory job though. I'll keep looking.
