KTVU's Dennis Richmond

Dennis Richmond announced his retirement this evening on the 6 o'clock news. He leaves in May.

Any thoughts on his replacement?

I've noticed that the era of the star anchor appears to be over - maybe stations are doing it to save money, but they rarely bother to bring slick anchors from out of town, anymore. They usually just promote a competent anchor or reporter from existing staff.

Examples: 1. KNTV's no-hurry approach in replacing Allen Denton.
2. ABC 7's decision not to replace Jessica Aguirre, and have Dan Ashley anchor solo at 11:00.

I prefer this no-BS approach. The news is much improved the last few years, and I think we're much better off . Remember the sensationalist and over-blown Van Amburg era, when all the stations did "special report" series during sweeps months - always about something prurient involving sex or violence? Actually, KTVU and Dennis Richmond led the way with the no-nonsense approach. Prior to that, in the mid-70s, they were "Action News," I remember.

So it most likely will be Somerville, or somebody else from KTVU.

Dennis Richmond was anchoring during the "Action News" era. White curved, rounded desk with the 2 logo in engraved into the front... and the teletype SFX loop running under all studio audio.

Used to watch a lot on cable in Marysville, and would occasionally sell and take film to KTVU from Sacramento.

Yes - I do recall that Dennis came along in that era - before KTVU changed directions to market the 10 O'Clock News as the antidote to all the "happy-talk" sensationalized news on the other stations.

Before Richmond anchored (he was probably already in the building), I remember the hair-sprayed deep-voiced somewhat pompous Judd Hambrick doing sensationalist teasers during the 8 O'Clock Movie..."Action News! At 10:00!"

By the way - no nonsense approach or not, and modern teletype technology or not, they kept running that old-fashioned teletype SFX under the studio audio until maybe 3 or 4 years ago.

I was hoping this day would never come. I hope whoever fills the seat doesnt come in and try to be an entertainer. Thats what I liked best about Dennis, he gave you the news straight forward, didnt shoot for the stars and still was the best at what he did/does.

Not likely. As discussed above, KTVU gained appreciation from TV news critics in the late 70s - and ratings success then and now - with their no-nonsense approach to news - No "happy talk," and no sensationalism.

In the unlikely event they put in an anchor who deviates from this, I'm sure they'll warn him to knock it off.
