KTWV playing rap now

I was looking at their mediabase recently played and The Wave is now playing Nelly ft City Spud “Ride With Me and “Dilemma” (which crossed over to Urban AC in 2002.

Just recently I heard they 94.7 the wave play LIFEHOUSE hanging by a moment. I was shocked that's a rockin tune. I remember Kroq playing that when it dropped in fall of 2000.

Also, it's always so funny that most of these "Holy crap! (Call Letters) are playing (song/genre)!" usually come from someone who was reading their "last played" online, and not actually listening to how it sounds on air.

Not to mention that it might only get one spin during an entire week. Not regular rotation.

The Wave is a hybrid of Soft AC and Rhythmic AC because they include a lot R&B that crossed over to pop

I could hear the clean version of Ride Wit Me on soft AC. Not unlike See You Again with Charlie Puth.

Which is almost certainly edited for airplay on The Wave. Here's that edit:

And here's the radio edit of Dilemma:

Both of these are pop songs so they fit for the target audience of KTWV.

If a song is number 1 for multiple weeks then it's now a pop song and whatever you may perceive that it sounds like is completely irrelevant.

I personally think Dilemma fits more sonically with the format, which is a customized sound for the market that previously was much more picky about the sound of a song fitting them. However, these are huge hits and I'm sure that the Wave is finding that they need to make some sonic compromises to keep their demos strong.

It's impressive how Audacity manages 3 gold formatted stations in LA. They all consistently do very well and focused on their specific niche.

They’ve played Usher Nice & Slow a couple of days ago which was #1 on the Hot 100 for two weeks in February 1998. I wonder if they cut out the rap part. I used hear that song a lot of airplay on 92.3 The Beat and Power 106 back in 1998.

Off topic but KTWV considered Urban AC now but the real Urban AC is KJLH.
It's an urban ac for a market that is I think 8% black, so they program the station for a different audience than most urban ACs, and thus they have a more mainstream yet fairly wide playlist.
For 2023 and the need to adjust to stay with the their targeted demos, they still maintain their unique sound and feel for So. Cal.

It's a much classier sound than the Rhythmic ACs too, much less "rap" than both formats. Good stations are usually in some way unique to their market.

Methinks they are just on a vendetta against rap/hip-hop being played on radio period

I’ve been listening to The Wave since I was a kid on my way to school in the car because my grandma used to play The Wave and KJLH and she would listen to Power and The Beat as well. I honestly wasn’t fond of the station when I was younger because I thought that the music was boring but since I hit my 20’s I started listening to The Wave regularly right around the time they changed the music. I never thought I’d hear Brandy’s I Wanna Be Down but I like it.

I know some people list it as "Urban AC." But it really isn't. The morning drive personality is Liz Hernandez. In PM drive, it's Deborah Howell. No Steve Harvey or Rickey Smiley or other Urban AC syndicated shows.

All of the frequently heard artists on The Wave are as common or more common on the AC charts as they are on any Urban or R&B charts. As much as you might hear Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Rhianna and Luther Vandross, you also hear Phil Collins, Sting, Gloria Estefan, Adele and Simply Red.

So what should we call it? A mix of Rhythmic AC and Soft AC? Maybe Smooth AC? Or it just resists a label?

First and foremost I’m 29 and I’ve been monitoring the station by streaming as of late I don’t have a vendetta with any radio station. I’m avid listener of the hip hop genre mainly 1980’s-2005.
Hi Brandon. I'm glad you're here, and I appreciate your opinions about radio stations and music. 😊(y)

First of all, it's Nelly. It's not Ice Cube or Public Enemy. His music has been used in Honey Nut Cheerios commercials, for heaven's sake. He's even been played on some mainstream AC stations. He's about as non-threatening as hip-hop can get.
Second of all, "Dilemma" samples an '80s Patti LaBelle hit, which seems to me like it would be a very good fit.
As for The Wave, I wish Detroit had a station like it, but with a Latinx population a fraction the size of L.A.'s it'd never happen.
