Okay, people have been talking about 94.7 flipping for a while, in the past couple of weeks that talk has seemed to escalate. What IS going on with this station? What else could it flip to? It seems as if it has some of the qualities of a Fresh-type station. Could it be all news? Could it be back to talk? It seems as if talk wouldn't be completely out of the question, CBS still has most of the old KLSX'ers by a string around their fingers, plus the economy is getting better.

If FM talk were viable, CBS would have moved it instead of killing it.

As for other moves, cue David Eduardo and the facts about KTWV's billing.

Let me preface this by saying I don't think it will flip, because it is still billing well (as of 2008).

However, if it was to flip, I would think CBS would continue their assault on Clear Channel by going in a Hot AC or Hot AC leaning CHR direction, to take on My 104.3. They could damage Clear Channel and compliment Amp Radio, by having a pair of female leaning stations to sell.

In the CBS stable, I would say look to Sophie in San Diego and Y98 in St. Louis as two examples of Hot AC stations that target women and are doing nicely in the PPMs.

Why move something that was costing the company a lot, in these hard times? Like I said an article in the LA Times last night basically said, the end of the recession is "near," so maybe not now, but in the near future that it shouldn't be out of the question. It's a viable product, and proved to be so for many years, so CBS should give it a second look.

2008 it was 9th in the market in billing, third in the CBS cluster after KROQ and Jack. It has fallen about 30% from 2003 to 2008, and we know 2009 is off for everyone.

In this economy, it would have to lag significantly to justify starting over at zero.

Anyone that thinks the end of the recession is near is completely delusional. Massive government juicing of the economy, through massive debt, is making some numbers go up, but where are the jobs? Are employees getting raises? Are companies rehiring laid-off workers? How deep are people in credit card debt? How's the value of your house? How many homeowners are underwater? How many foreclosures are waiting to happen? Oh, yes, the state of California is virtually bankrupt, drowning in debt amid declining revenues.

Put away the Kool-aid. Rough road still ahead. Broadcasting is going to be feeling the pain for quite some time.

I agree... people drinking kool-aid. The economy is not getting better. The only reason companies are showing larger profits is they keep firing people.

Unemployment isn't getting any better and until it does and housing goes back up - we have a bad economy to deal with.

Expect Q1 2010 to be a tough spot.

Musicfan:
It was a viable product for many years largely because of Howard Stern. Once that was over, ratings and revenue dropped like a stone. Leykis (the station's #2 draw) alone wasn't enough.

Sure, it would be bold to flip a station while it is still billing well but then again, the downward trend is clear at KTWV. The demos for Hot AC are so much better than Smooth Jazz. Now may be the best opportunity to set themselves for better billings in the future.

Bold isn't the word. In this climate, you don't trade 100 million dollars in billing over the next four years on a shot at being better in year five. You keep taking the money now...you watch the market carefully. If a sure thing like AMP presents itself you consider making a move sooner. But radio is littered with the carcasses of stations and their managers who dumped money-making formats too soon...only to find the new demos and revenue showed up too late...or never.

AMP was no "sure thing" back then; it only seems like it now, after the fact. Back then, it was a bold decision. So, perhaps CBS is feeling it can do it again.

AMP wasn't a shot in the dark. Research showed hit music was back and KIIS-FM was vulnerable. Even in a moderately successful scenario, it would cost less and bill more than Free FM had been. It's done better than that.

But Free was in much worse shape than KTWV...and finding a format with as much potential upside won't be easy. AMP filled the obvious hole.

AMP was probably the best decision that CBS has made in the past decade, along with flipping Arrow 93 to Jack. It seems that the staff at CBS in LA is trained into making chump change into big billing. They'll know when enough is enough and they know when to cut their losses. If KTWV is doing good, they'll still be on the air for years to come. If that's not true, then CBS is probably pulling in some market research as I write this. Either way, CBS will find something to hole in KTWV that will make them some money. AC or Hot AC would probably be the best bet to compete with KOST and KBIG and create an advertising package with AMP.

[/quote]What was KLSX billing as an FM Talk format? I just don't see why or how that couldn't be profitable again somewhere down the line. I mean, it's proven it hold it's own for the past three years before the economy went south, and it shouldn't be out of the question.

Musicfan: It stopped being viable when Howard Stern left. The recession just sealed the deal.

Even when the economy improves, you've got no Howard...and if....HUGE if...he went back to CBS...so much of his audience has developed new listening habits over the years, there's no guarantee he'd be big enough.

There's a new thread ("Wave Goodbye") that suggests (no confirmation) KTWV will go Christmas next week and unveil a new format on December 26 with Jhani Kaye as PD.

The speculation is a direct soft AC challenge to KOST (which Jhani used to program). If true, this wouldn't be starting at zero, as with some of the formats discussed in this thread. My guess is that would be a fairly easy transition, keep a chunk of WAVE listeners, as well as most of the Christmas listeners. And with KOST having double KTWV's cume in the current PPMs, there's some incentive.

I just don't understand some of the music played on KTWV IS music that is played on KOST...c'mon CBS do something else with 94.7
